Hi,
is it possible for a character to go from a novice to a grand master
in just two or three weeks? I've seen a couple of "newbies" wandering
about and before I knew it...they were GM.
thanks,
Jim

Using a katana, swords can be GM'd in 3 evenings.

I took my T-Hunter char from 0-73 in around an hour and a half,
fighting a banned grizzly bear, then a lizardman while constantly
healing myself.
Pre uo:r when I first started with my main char, it took me months
just getting to 60 in swords.

Not quite - the trade skills on the whole mean something, and magery is
still a bitch to GM. Only really GM warriors are "meaningless" in the sense
of the skills can be GMed so quickly by power houring in the bone knight
room and so forth. At the end of the day though, it is how you play the game
that generates enjoyment for yourself and those around you rather than the
number of pointless GM skills you might have.

What did Grandmaster mean before?

That you had been playing UO for longer than 2 days :)

I was thinking about this with my tamer. I pretty much created my 2nd tamer
when guilds went into the game<?> to take care of any horses that went wild
for the guild members.

Overtime, GM'd archery and tactics, fairly good macer. Then came the archery
nerf, taming patches, anatomy bonus that made macing and archery worthless,
dex bonuses that made the character even more worthless.

So I started marking stuff down. First to go was all my rangerish type crap
I thought were character appropriate. No tailoring, no tracking, no hiding,
everything must go.

Next to go was maces. I didn't like the title GM warrior anyway, so dropping
tactics for EI. This leaves my tamers current title as "GM archer". Heck,
cool. Takes me 4 arrows to kill a headless with no tactics and anatomy, but
the chr is a GM archer.

So after reading your comment I would like to add, "GM archer means you had
an arrow mule" even if it isn't true for this character. Kind on not funny
in an odd way. People seem to give a second take on the character, like the
pecieved 3 days *and* an arrow mule is completely over the top dedication to
the game. I am thinking about making a few GM archers 'cuz it is cool, 'cept
I will make real GM archers with anatomy and tactics and 100 dex.

You can get a GM warrior in the matter of two weeks only during
powerhours just to fight bone knights in Deceit, thanks to the OSI's
powerhour patch

The perception of "Grandmaster = Veteran, Novice = Newbie" has been wrong
since 3 years anyway, so I don't quite see the value in that.
3 years ago Grandmaster ment the ability to create a working macro, not that
you knew much about the game.

Neither does x time GM mean you are stronger in PvP (or PvM) than a x-y time
GM.
One of my first PvP victories was with a throw-away character with 80
fencing against a triple GM. We had a heated discussion at the Britain bank
and he challenged me then. He made the same false assumptions about PvP
strength. My first hit with the newbie dagger deadly poisoned him and he was
dead way before he reached the bank. Gave me the first important lesson that
equipment (and luck) is far more important than skill. And that you can't
judge a persons strength by stats or skills or fame or karma.
(Actually I got that lesson when I was killed by a tank thief in the east
woods with a deadly poisoned weapon. But that's another story.)

Mot really until a few days ago. I would hazard a guess that you could
make GM mage in about 6 hours using 8x8. I think it is fixed now but I
could never get it to work for magery anyway though I used it to GM
healing.

I have started to put magery on a char on my 2nd account so I can use
him to bounce e bolts and flames off my others for resist. After 3 hours
of slow forward and fizzling flame strikes I am at 84 magery and that is
without 8x8. I know that Brandy took my SP mage from 90 to GM in less
than three full power hours.

The only skills that seem slow to raise combat wise are EI and Resist.
Anatomy seems to be slow then just shoot up, healing is real easy now
compared to pre UO:R and the weapons skills are incredibly easy.

Now cartography...................

Who the heck is running Megan on SP?

Near as I can figure, Megan made GM or near it in magery, tamer, lockpicker,
remove trap in less then a month.

I dunno but they must have put some hours in. I can't imagine GMing
locks now with the new code, was easy when I did it, just used the same
old box all the way up while fishing.

I can believe magery and taming though. I think detect is RoT so if you
were only doing that 1 skill you could get it in a month pretty easy.

As near as I can tell, Megan spends 24/7 on the southern tip of Ice Isle.
Picking locks, taming wolves, removing traps, and summoning deamons.

Not your average power gamer though, will always stop to say hi or hold a
conversation.

If I was looking for a quick 3 million to buy a SP castle, that is the same
skill mix I would have chosen. Human trait I guess, someone appears to make
the same decisions you would make and they become 'smart' by default. I am
betting Megan is in it for the long haul one way or another. Either a super
mule behind another chr or a super chr in their own right.

Only actual day I spent on SP outside of power hours I made just under 20k
picking chests. I didn't do any of the good ones, 300 gold tops, but some
are supposed to spawn ~700 gold each in Shame. I imagine between the
Summoned deamons, dragons, and lockpicking, only place that will be off
limits would be the Orpidians/Tetras.

Some in Shame and Yew Crypts have a random spawn between 5 and 800 plus
gems which are worthless on SP and the occasional good magic item. Only
problem is these level 5 chests are picked constantly by the mules of
GC, UDL etc and if you turn up it is only a few seconds before they log
in the camped out red and kill you. Would make better money sticking to
the lesser chests as you would get out with it.

I have seen Megan on Ice Isle. I started taking my tamer there but I'm
not that welcome on Ice anymore so I've left it a bit.
