well...I still check posts here sometimes...I have stopped playing UO,
and I guess I will turn the light off soon...

sad really...I miss the thriving years of UO :-), but the last
expansions was a big disappointment to me and my GF, they forced people
to play in big packs to have even a microscopic chance of getting the
real good stuff, and we almost always play just the 2 of us so...and
when they forced me to use the 2D client again BEFORE the new client was
even out, well, that did it. So, after 9 years, its goodbye. I didnt
even bother to save my stuff on chars before ending the
subscription...some house looter on Drachen got lucky :-)

Life goes on (thank god!) :-)

If its any consolation- my subscription to UO lasted alot longer than
LOTRO.........

Seems that not only is it hard to find a MMORPG you love----its harder to
find one that the devs wont fuck up after you fall in love with
it...........

I still check in.
Is it safe to talk about the free servers now?

Apparently there are new open source projects for the client side. That
would free us from EULA violations. Has anyone checked into those?

I started playing WoW having become bored with UO, now I'm bored with WoW
and have started playing UO again. I *still* prefer the 2D client though.
I feel less connected with the world in WoW than I do in UO. Having houses
is a plus, additionally I like the way you can leave things on the ground
for others in UO. Can't do that in WoW.

Good info. I have been debating starting up WoW.
Especially when I noticed that WoW now has free player-run servers popping
up also (which is what I feel saved UO for me)

Please feel free to talk about free servers :-) Can you recommend some,
or maybe point me in the right direction ? I really want the server to
be in Europe, if they let me run the "old" 3D-client thats good, but the
2d-client is ok too, and if there are any free shards that has the
trammel-feluca thingy thats good too, that way I might get my GF to
start all over with me again (she dont want to play where she can be
killed by yber-geared players...)

Why dont you play the free servers? The official servers suck anyway.

There are over 300 free servers setup by players. They cover a huge
range. PKill, no PKill, straight UO, modified beyond recognition, easy
with tons of freebies, or really hard to advance, crowded, or so empty
that there is actually WILDERNESS to go build a house in.

The easiest way is to go to UOGateway.com and get their front-end
program. That will show you a list of something like 300 servers with a
small bit about them. You can use it to visit them one at a time and flag
the ones you like. Once you pick one you can just edit the text file in
the UO directory that says which servers to go to, and use your UO
program directly.

There are also sites that list servers and something about them.
http://www.uogateway.com
http://www.topshards.com
http://www.connectuo.com
http://www.gamesitestop100.com/ultimaonline
http://www.xtremetop100.com/ultima-online
http://www.topmmorpgsites.com/ultimaonline
http://www.gamesites200.com/ultimaonline

I play on a really small shard that is adult-run, hard gains, no pkill
(but they do have an arena for challenges), and its really quiet. There
is actually wilderness that I can build a house and have no neighbors
anywhere near me. But it still has enough players to get up a hunting
party to do the champions.

Ultima Online: nice place to visit but I wouldnt want to live there.
Wait a minute, do we have that choice yet? No? Oh ok, in that case, yeah
what I said.

I just wanted to say that when I was playing UO that I used this group (so
to speak) for any info I could about the game of UO. I loved UO. I really
did. The thought in my brain is this though. I set res to 1024x768 because
it works best on my PC at that lvl and lag on screen like crazy. Now when I
play WoW in all its 3D glory. I play at 1280x1024 and get 75 FPS. Yes I do.
I dont know why. I really dont. My PC is not that Uber to where it should
shove old software out and say play the new stuff. PC is 4 years old. I've
only upgraded the graphics card. Thats it. Therfore. I will probally not
ever return to UO. But I want to tell everyone that posted here Thank ALL of
You for the information about the game that helped me along in the 3 1/2
years I played UO. It truely was a bad ass game and still is for those who
can play it. If they ever decide to make a UO 2 that plays something like
and looks something like WoW. I will DEFFINATELLY be back. So with that. I
say good bye. Take care all and Happy Hunting in your endevours.

It's good to see that it's still burning! And I thought you said you
were going to leave years ago ;)
UO certainly aint what it was, but strangely enough I'm back playing
again after a break of about 2 years. No, I've no idea why...
