Hello, I bought UO a couple days ago, and I hear everyone talking about
Liches are the toughest monster. Could someone plz tell me what it
looks like, how strong it is, so if I see one, I'll know when to
hide. :) Thx.

A lich looks like a old guy with a staff and white hair and a blue robe. If
you see one you better run.

They look like a beefed-up version of a zombie and have a really evil
laugh. THe easiest way to notice them is to look for all the players
running in the opposite direction hehehe

According to AD&D, Lich is a former mage, powerful and evil.... they are a
kind of undead creature. Probably even stronger than undead dragons.

Well - that depends upon where you are at the time and what your magery is. If
you're in a cave and you get them to chase you - you can duck around a corner
and they'll stop. When that happens you fireup Explosion or Energy Bolt, step
out, whack 'em and jump back. Make sure that you cast RA and Reflect on yourself
first and watch your hit points. Watch his as well. When his are down to about
25% or less and yours are still up there, run up to him and whack him until he
drops. Needless to say you have to have a good sword arm. Halberds are good here
if your sword/tactics are up.

Otherwise - Studoggy is right - run. It works best when there are two of you but
I've done 'em toe-to-toe. I've also got myself killed.

I saw a guy 2 months ago on Sonoma sitting in the dungeons waiting for
Liches. He killed about 10 of them alone. It was a shock.
Something must have been up because the server was only up for about
1.5 weeks.

They are tough, but not toughest. If they see you make a kind of wheezing
laugh. They look like a frail undead mage. They have up to 6th level
spells (maybe 7th??) and take like 4 energy bolts to kill. They are very
deadly close up.

Nah, the stats/skills advancement rate used to be all screwed up. I
remember when i first started on Sonoma, I raised my my strength from 45 to
63 in about 3 hours. Spent a day (like 6-8 hours) to get my
swordsmanship/tactics to the upper 80's. Another day to raise magery to
around mid 70's or so. Then use the 3rd day to fine tune some skills. Oh
by then my strength was around 72 or so. So before the skill advancement
rate changes (much, much slower now), someone/anyone could get a character
strong enough to kill liches in less than 3 days. Now... forget about it.

Liches are not the toughtest monster, but they are pretty tough, especially
for a newbie. In fact, you have to be pretty strong to take them on 1 on 1.
They look like really tall skeletons with long grey hair and grey robes and
holding a staff. You'll know it's time to hide when you hear their sinister
laugh. Once you hear that laugh, you'll nevr forget it.

Add, they look like an oversized sheep herder with a long hooked
staff like a shepard would carry.
The real problem with a lich is they have a great magic attack &
are seldom alone. They almost seem to have good AI in that if you
are near overloaded they will cast something like weaken. This
results in you losing your stamina & getting stuck. The Lich will
then start casting various fire & electrical attacks, some of
these do close to 50 points damage so I you don't get healed
before the next attack, you stand a good chance of going down.
The zombies et al that are smacking you while the Lich is frying
you do enough spell interruption to make it a tough battle.
That being said, a master warrior with about an expert/journeyman
mage can take out a lich in head to head combat w/o a lot of
trouble. The warrior just charges while the mage keeps him/her
healed & gets in an offensive spell from time to time.
If you find a Lich in a graveyard, they are relatively easy to
kill. Just cast spells from outside the fence & don't go near the
gate so they stay inside.
Another thing I've noticed with a lich: They may have great magic
resistance but they are suckers for purple potients. I would like
to go after one with a good alchemist just to see how many
explosive potients it would take, but I would bet it would be
less then 10.

I had an encounter with a Lich as a newbie. I'd managed to kill a goat (with a just a little bit of help) and thought I
was a bad ass, so I decided to kill some monsters. Someone had told me that graveyards are good places for newbies to hunt, so
I headed to the one just north of Britian with my long sword and wooden shield. As I entered the graveyard I saw a strange and
tall creture to my left. I thought "Oh boy now I get to kill my first monster!" The last thing I heard was that dry creepy
laugh. I didn't even have time to macro into war mode.

Others have mentioned a number of things about liches, most of them
are correct. My own experiences:

Appearance: Tall thin monster with a staff and blue-grey robes. You
will often hear its chilling laugh before you see it.

Magic ability: casts up thru 7th circle. Has enough mana to cast
consecutive flamestrikes (7th circle spell that players cast for 40
mana). Two flamestrikes from a lich will kill most "unprotected"
players (see below for explanation).

Hit points: seems to have around the same as a gargoyle or elemental.
I can usually kill one with 3 energy bolts (magery 91.6).

How to kill one: like most magical monsters, the lich will not cast
at you until it engages you physically. So you have time to cast an
energy bolt, maybe 2, to weaken it. Like all magical monsters,
Reactive Armor will save your life once it does engage you. An Adept
or Master fighter protected this way should be able to kill it before
RA wears off, especially if it is already wounded. Unlike most
monsters, the lich will not run when it is badly wounded.

If you are on Catskills and would like to see a lich, or help fight
one, my icq number is 5628159. There are certain lich spawning places
where the next lich spawns 5-20 seconds after you kill one.

I thought liches were those blobby easy things I saw in Shame. They were
grey and pink and had gold when you killed them. What am I thinking
of-slime?

I had swords of about 40.. ac 30.. a few 3rd level spells.. pretty good for
where I was. Soo, being the adventurer that I am(was?) I headed into the
Britain graveyard to beat up on some monsters. A skeleton or two later, I
heard this creepy ehehehehe sound and saw something that looked like my
grandfather in a blue bathrobe carrying a broom. I grinned to myself,
figuring on toasting this old man easily. . . .
His first spell did about half damage to me, so i decided that this was not
a good time to push things. When I was running, the tree branches whipping
my face, I heard him say something. I thought "Oh, SH*T!". Then everything
went dark and a few minutes later I was standing over my corpse. Now, I am
older and wiser. I know better than to mess with anything that looks like my
grandpa in a blue bathrobe carrying a broom. Some people say that to learn
you must live. I say that dying a few times helps, too...

I have to laugh.
I thought I was pretty bad assed when I started playing. I killed a few
bunnies, then a goat. I thought I could take on the world. I went
after a lizard man and he beat me down pretty bad and I managed to run
into town. He followed me into town and still beat on me. No one helped
me but all laughed and looted my mutilated body when I died.
But to answer your question, Lichs are 10x as bad as a lizard man
because they can cast spells. Which means you dont have to be near for
them to kill you. Even if you try and run away, they can still cast
magic on you and zapp you when you are off of the screen. Stay away
form them until your resist magic skill is good. :)
