How does one cast spells without freeing his hands? I know it can be
done, do you have to be a grandmaster mage or can you be a grandmaster
anything? Thanks for the help/

No, you can not cast spells without your hands being empty, with one
exception, an order or chaos shield.

Are you saying that you have seen spelling casting done with something other
than those shields in their hands?

I saw at the daily "server down battle" a guy who shot an bolt at one and
casted a Fireball at another guy simultaneous.

Could it be a Scroll ?

I love this place...you are always learning more about UO.

What advantage does equiping a spellbook have?

It prevents the game from using your Wrestling skill to auto-defend
with. Of course, I am already a Master Wrestler, so for me it does
nothing.

Um... No. That is the reason we wanted this feature but OSI in their
infinite wisdom implemented this as a "Purely Cosmetic Feature"...

You sure?

I thought they said it was a cosmetic change only.

No, I think not:

"Spellbooks will be equippable. This is a purely cosmetic change. It
will not change the mechanics of casting at all (except that you will
be able to cast with the spellbook in your hands)."

Oops, I think I probably am wrong about this. I guess I just WISHED
it worked that way, and WISHED it had worked that way from the
beginning. Darn.

Here is how you do it.

You need your paperdoll and backpack open.

Empty your hands and start casting the spell, your cursor turns into a
target. Now single click and drag your weapon ontu your paperdoll, your
cursor will remain a target the entire time. If someone attacks you,
you'll be able to cast a single spell.

Note: This only works for 30 seconds, after which, you can't cast the
spell.

i know if you die with your spellbook in your pack, it will stay there when
you get ressurected. but will you keep it if you have it in your hands when
you die?

Hmm.

I don't know.

Give it a whirl and let us know...

It does act like you don't have a spellbook when you polymorph and try to
use another spell like "heal"... but of course that's a bad thing... once I
saw that I have never equipped my spellbook since.
