Is UO still any good? Can a casual player play it? It's been how long

If you still have your original discs then you might go ahead and upgrade
it.
I found that UO (and really any online world) became quite playable again
when I find the free player run servers. UO has over 300 servers being done
by players who felt they could do it better. Pretty much any complaint you
had about the official servers has been convered by someone. Too crowded,
or not crowded enough? Too much PvP, or not enough PvP? Too many cursing
kids, or too much adult supervision? Did you feel that one of the upgrades
went too far? Then someone is bound to have agreed and frozen their server
on the one you liked. Or some who go off on their own adding caves,
monsters, quests, etc. And there are even some that are so modified that
the maps, quests, monsters, etc dont match UO at all.

Killing animals, skinning them, trying out crafts making things from their
parts, visiting other players junk sales. My wife LOVES me playing UO
because she hates it when I try those things in our real garage.
A me too post. GP has it right about finding an independent shard that
suits you.
My complaints about the way OSI did things are legion. Most notably are
that they are corrupt liars who never hesitated to fabricate a lie when
it suited them. Most of the lies insulted your intelligence. For
instance when literally thousands of players asked them to do something
about tracking cheaters and getting rid of stat and skill hackers they
said it was impossible. We find out later when cheaters published their
warning letters from OSI that not only could they find them, they had
and let them stay in the game.
After being on private shards for a couple of years and setting one up
myself to see what it is about, doing things like catching cheaters and
bug abusers is almost too easy. Biggest revert I have ever seen is less
then an hour. Patches are tested before they are installed. Instead of
nerfing a skill because someone is jealous they tend to add things to
make everyone happy.
Takes anywhere from 10 minutes to maybe half a day to set up to play a
private shard. It has been made a bit harder by UO Gateway and Connect
UO being down for a while but with Razor you can just add the address of
the shard you want to play.

I've been playing the free version of Mabinogi a bit lately. It
looked a little childish when I first looked at it, a 12yo called my
attention to it. But as I played I found it actually a little fun, not
as involved as UO but there are jobs and crafts and stuff.

Perhaps a metaphor might help:
1. Your emails are like sperm, ready to dash out and do their thing.
2. Your ISP is a prick.
3. APEWS is a condom.
4. We are innocent maidens who do not like surprises.
5. You are asking for one teeny hole in the rubber.
