Ho hum. Today I've had the suddent desire to make some Ultima-related
sketches. I was thinking of doing a pseudo-history collage of various
happenings in the games. Unfortunately, I can't draw. Grr.

Looking for inspiration, I founf a portrait of Minax in the U6 manual, I
think. What's up with her hair!?!

I very recently realized that I should've nabbed a degree in Fine Arts
with a concentration in "Using Teh Fancay Computar Machine to Kre8
Grafix!!!@!1" instead of Liberal Arts with a concentration in "Reads
teh Books and Writes teh Bullshit!!!~11".

I also should've not settled for UNLV, which doesn't offer the former
program.

Anyway, drawing is good.

Practice. Dave Sim, despite being a vile asshole, once offered one of
the best pieces of advice, ever: Start with a large stack of blank
paper. Maybe 2' worth. Fill them with drawings. When the stack is
gone, you will know how to draw.

But that would involve time and money, neither of which are
plentiful...

I don't know of any art supply store that runs classes, actually...
Though I've never really spent any time in any of them, so that
means essentially nothing. They're nifty places - lots of nice pens
and paper and stuff like that. But I don't have a clue what to do
with any of it.

I second that.

An important point: Draw the same picture again. Most people, when trying to
draw (or paint) and they are dissatisfied with the results will either give
up, or try to draw another picture. Either way they'll not learn as much as
they could from the first attempt.

Another issue: Drawing is really a matter of seeing. Study your objects
carefully: Where is the light, what is REALLY the shape of the object you're
drawing, and also: look at the object from several angles.

To augment this fine, fine point: persistence makes /better/. I wish I
had a scan of it whilst I was drawing it, but about thirteen months
ago, for reasons I'll not go into here, I was informally bidden by a
friend to draw a whole bunch of toucans.

Yeah, toucans.

Anyway. So I, having not really drawn much in... well, ever, apart
from a class in technical drawing in GCSE Technology three years ago,
got 'the big stack of decent paper' others have mentioned, about $12
worth of graded pencils, and sat down and started drawing toucans. I
got a biography from a bargain bookstore of a third-rate Victorian
ornithologist called Sir John Gould, who employed Edward Lear as an
artist and copied most of his work, and proceeded to... copy the
plates.

What I noticed, and came to profoundly believe, was that 9 out of ten
drawings, particularly ones that I draw, look pretty shit for the
first one or two hours of working on em. I don't draw in a very
orderly manner, not having taken too many theory lessons, but after
about four hours of just working on the musculature, shading and
whathaveyou, I had something that even to my eyes looked pretty nice.

Later I got to airbrush in colour on said friend's Wacom tablet, and
this was the result:

http://www.computing.surrey.ac.uk/images/fawkes.jpg

It ain't no masterwork - the claws in particular are exceptionally
fucked-up inventions of my mind, and I ended up taking a mildly
improvisational approach to colouring the plumage. I'm sure a pukka
artist could find a whole swathe of things wrong with it, or things
that could be improved...

...but I don't think it looks too bad, myself. :)

So have a go. Is lots of fun. There are millions and MILLIONS of
artists online who've got tutorials online to show you simple and
effective ways to learn human physiognomy and drawing techniques...
and it's pretty easy to pick up.

Oh, and it's worth getting some decent paper, if nothing else. Printer
paper sucks for drawing on - there's a really nice, branded recycled
paper that Oxfam carries over here called Second Impression. Drawing
on something which has some kinda texture to it is muchly to be
recommended over icky laser printer paper.

Or draw/paint from photographs.

My best ever painting is a little 6"x9" gesso board on which I painted
pretty much an exact copy of a photograph I had taken. I've never
surpassed that painting, and it was my first acrylic, back when I had very
little control over the medium.

I've done OK stuff since then, trying to paint what wasn't there, but I
always do better when painting something real, like that stupid little
photograph.

Not much of an imaginary artist, I guess you could say.

I don't do animals, and especially not people though. People are HARD to
master. Easy to draw a person, but hard to draw, say, Lumina and have the
damn thing look like Lumina.

Well anyway, I've always been better in three dimensions anyway.

Oooh, very nice... Second edition? What's changed since the first one?
^_^;

And annotated firewall logs! Neat! Submersible--he's not just a dragon,
he's a network security solution!

*sigh* If you'd only said that you were going to be our "provider,
companion, and MASTER! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!" then I'd have commented that your
face looks most muppet-like. But you didn't, and I won't. ^_^

Hehe. You enjoying that game?

I'm about to buy an optical trackball, but I might look to invest in
that some time afterwards. =)

The second edition was issued in response to the truly extraordinary
sales of the first edition, which left distributor's warehouses
utterly bereft of copies across the globe. There must be an awful lot
of people out there who want to know more about me. Or who are
confused. Or something.

As far as changes are concerned, the most significant was the removal
of the aston on the dustcover that proclaimed "includes spoilers for
'Harry Potter & The Incriminating Eiderdown'".

*coughs delicately*

The firewall logs are provided principally for ease of reference of
those readers perusing Chapter 7, 'Mastering Submersible - How To
Exploit His Frustrated Sexuality For Fun & Profit', pp149 - 374.

You haven't seen my "Picture of me (In a bad mood)" on my home page.

The link to my real ic is below that.

Oh, yes. It's a tamagotchi, Populous, and Syndicate all rolled up in one.
Plus, it has a nice physics model. *cackle*

My only gripe is that I thought I'd be a good god, but they seem to think
I'm evil. I guess the game engine's holding a grudge against me 'cause I
tried to demolish an enemy's temple by throwing his followers at it.

Okay, make that two gripes: things don't splatter when they hit hard
objects--it's an almost perfectly elastic collision. Rolling cows along
the ground at villages tends to resemble a skee-ball game.

An optical trackball? How decadent of you... ^_^;

If you don't mind the fact that the game has no moral compass (quite a
contrast from Ultima), and that there is no set time limit in many cases,
it's a really fun toy.

Speaking of Ultima, I'm waiting for someone or another to engineer an
Avatar creature so that I can play a god named "Lord British". ^_^

Oh... Well... That was the result of someone buying up all the books and
selling them on eBay for ridiculous prices. Not as if I was trying to make
a profit or anything. Well, I was. He was. The guy who pulled that nasty
stunt was. I think. But maybe we should give him the benefit of the
doubt. *nodnodnod*

Eh? There were spoilers for that in the first edition?! *checks his notes*

Ah, so... I figured Samurai wasn't a born talent for that sorta thing. He
was cribbing while we weren't looking, he was! *shakes head sadly*

Well, while you're here, you might as well help him practice. *shrug*

Ah, finally folks have a valid reason not to elect(?) you as Emperor of
*yadda yadda yadda*. Hey look, everyone! Lumina is actually the Guardian!
He's a plot device! Burn him!

I suppose I could go on about how that would be a much better plot than the
evil twin thing. But the evil twin thing's been beaten to death already.
Which is why I'm hearing this odd techno mix... That... By the Virtues!
That's... STONES!

Erm... No matter how many times I hear the soundtrack, I'll never get used
to that...chimera...of a tune...

Muah. And didn't I say I wasn't going to bother with being elected?

Only someone who knew how to draw would say that! Get him!

Yup. But getting burned/shot/smashed into tiny bits might interfere.
Besides, even if you did some bad, bad things (destroy planets, kill off
most of the other people), I think you'd have a decent chance of being
elected--as long as Florida was allowed to vote. ^_^

I, OTOH, has gotten way too used to Quake. I get annoyed over the fact
that I can't have 140 degrees field of view in real life...
