I'm buying a new PC, and have a couple of questions.
1) Vista32 or Vista64 (Upgrading to Win 7 is free)? Where can I find
information about compatibility probelsm with for instance games?
2) Radeon HD4870 or Geforce gx275. Performance should be about the same,
but I've no experience with Radeons - I'm a nVidia guy, and thus I've
heard nasty things about compatibility problems and image quality with
Radeons.
3) I can get a PC with Intel Core i7 920 for about the same price
(+200USD) as a PC with Core 2 Quad Q9650 (with water-cooling). Should I
go for i7?

I've been using W7 x64 for a while now, at least in a dual boot setup. Two
games I've played on it are Oblivion and LotRO. The only annoyance I've
come across is that the overlay you can use with Ventrilo doesn't work
with W7 yet. I had been able to make the Vent32 overlay work when testing
it on Vista32. I think we just have to wait for Vent to come out with a
new W7 compatible version.
I don't know of any site that collects all the info on game compatibility.
NTCompatible.com used to be somewhat good but I haven't checked it much
lately.
You can download a trial copy of W7 from MS until the end of the month,
IIRC. That way you could install it as a dual boot and test whatever
games you're worried about.
Dx10 isn't worth upgrading for by itself IMO.

I always go with nVidia these days. Never had a problem yet. Of course,
I don't upgrade my drivers every second. I usually stick with working
drivers until there is a specific reason to change.

Yes. That way you can upgrade later instead of being locked into the
previous generation socket.

The current free offering from VMware, VMware Server, has become very
unwieldy in its latest version and only runs in a browser. I've used
most VMs and I stick with VirtualBox now as it's lightweight and
robust.
Heh, I didnt know you were active in the solaris newsgroups as well :D

I have used Radeon cards since the end of the 3Dfx series I used to buy.
So far precious few problems have come up. Generally when they do it's
because a game was made specifically for Nvidia and that is usually
fixed relatively quickly with a patch or driver update. I can also count
on one hand the number of times it has happened.
I think it'll also depend on the mobo/cpu etc. that you buy. I have an
Asus with an ATI Southbridge and an AMD CPU and it works pretty well.
Now with AMD chips on the ATI cards it should sync up even better.
