Tonight I've learned that my entry into the Southern Cross Packaging
Awards competition has won a second place in it's ctaegory, which was a
package for the aluminium household foil.

Funny thing is, I didn't even want to enter the bloody competition: I've
always hated, hated, hated packaging and I didn't think much of my foil
pack either. At one point I even decided to chicken out, skip the
competition and deal with the lecturers' holy wrath later on. I've fixed
it up the night before the due date and submitted it half an hour before
the official deadline. Just typical: stuff I don't give a toss about
wins prizes, while the things I sweat over the most barely get a decent
mark.

But I'm so haaaapppyyyy anyway!

Heh. I know that feeling. The electric guitar I built in a fortnight got
me an A in my GCSE woodworking classes - err, I suppose that translates
as something like a high school diploma? oh, gods... - while the pieces
of music I wrote and produced for my Music A-level. Mmm. They failed to
capture the hearts of the examiners.

Odd. I never did get the results of my re-mark back, either...

*pout*

Hmm... this does not bode well for Sweetness and Light and Pauly's Dirty

Ahh - so they still have A levels? How many do you need to get to
college nowadays?

Well done.

That's typical I suspect. I always seem to do better with things I do
straight off the top of my head than I do with extensive preplanning and
work.

That's great.

Well, the lowest entry requirements that I ever saw, which were for
something like a Bachelor in Media Science from somewhere in Humberside,
were along the lines of two Es.

(Location, location, location!)

Most colleges/universities (all the old tech and polytech colleges have
become universities in the last ten years, AFAIK) require three A-level
grades. I remember being very surprised to see things like "CDD" as
entry requirements: ah, the naivete of youth^H^H^H^H^Ha year and a half
ago. :)

I sat four A-levels: Physics, History, Maths, and Music Technology. But
it was made clear to me that only three results would be considered.
That is, with the universities that do admissions on points, where an A
== 10 and a C == 6, only the three highest scoring grades out of the
four would be tallied.

I ended up dragging in C, B, C, and a D. The last one was a very
controversial result and supposedly was going to be remarked, but I
never heard anything more of it. Not that I really care. I did that
course for the tuition, not for the qualification, weird as that might
sound...

But those results got me into a pretty respectable CompSci course, once
I'd gone into full-time employment (painter/decorator) for a while to
earn some money to afford the course. :)

Two for the former polytechnics that are now universities, and still
three for the rest. Occasionally four for Oxbridge and other 'top'
unis. A-Levels haven't changed much for some time, AFAIK.

There _was_ a suggestion that we abandon them and go over to a more
baccalaureate-type system, but I don't think that'll happen any time
soon. A-Levels are one of the few things British education still has
going for it. :)

No. High school diploma = A-Levels, more or less.
