My favorite Avatar names are:
Sioned - female (character from Melanie Rawn's Dragon Prince series of books)
Morgan - female (yes, the King Arthur legends, but I just like it)
Tirnanog - male - (actual Celtic word, no idea what the definition is, but it makes a good Druid name)
Acroyal - male - (my own invention, I think)
I also use the same names no matter what game I'm playing. Each has their own "personality", so which name I use depends upon my attitude at the time and the game's environment.

Okay guys, I guess I'll have to chip in my fav Avatar name to your ever expanding list; Clavicus. Yup. I came up with this name when I was trying to think up of a nice classical-greek sounding name for my avatar. I tried to think of the name of that main character from that drama on PBS starring the guy who formerly played Picard on Star Trek, but couldn't think of it (the show was 'I, Claudius' for the record'). Anyway, Clavicus was the closest sounding corruption I could think of and I have been using it ever since. Also a close second favorite name is 'Bob the Palindrome'

It's interesting how a lot of people choose one name and stick with it. If you can't transfer characters, using the same name every time is ALMOST as good. I always use "Malcolm". It's a real-world name but definitely has that dash of fantasy panache that we all love. Except after I patched U8 and had to start a new game I used "Lord Jailrock" for some reason, and I have NO idea why. Ultima 3 was a different issue. I decided Malcolm wasn't along for the ride that time, and used names of characters from a D&D campaign I once ran. (Not my characters, my friends' characters.) Holodyr, Gregor, etc..

Arwen is a female name? I know three male RL Arwens but no female ones... I am always Garamon which is taken from ultima underworld 1... Aragorn's a nice name...

Hmm...I just used the names Claudius and Tiberius, until I came up with Corvus as an alternative to Ravenhill, which is my usual choice of name. Corvus is latin for crow, which is sort of like a raven. Also, it turns out that Ravenhill isn't as origional a name as I thought. I origionally intended it to be a corruption of Wavyhill (at least I think that's what it was), the animated skull from _The_Magic_Goes_Away_ by Larry Niven. When I recently reread _The_Hobbit_, I was suprised to learn (relearn?) that Ravenhill is the name of one of the foothills of the Lonely Mountain. Somehow I must have pulled that name out of my subconcious...
Yeah, _I,_Claudius_ was a cool show. Derek Jacoby has got to be one of my all time favorite actors.

"Clavicus", meaning "Mr Collar Bone". No honestly.

Ha! He (Steve Jackson) is also responsible for Fighting Fantasy, GURPS and the Illuminanti card game (I think there are two Steve Jacksons in the gaming industry - one based in the UK the other in America)...
Me, I always play a female Avatar called Sif, after the norse goddess.

Yes, Arwen is the name of a female elf in Lord of the Rings. I think she was the daughter of Galadriel, the elf queen in Lothlorien. It's been a time since I read the book, but as far as I remember she married Aragorn at the end of the book. Correct me if I'm wrong.
My Favourite Avatar name is: Retief. This is from Keith Laumer's Jame Retief, a sort of intergalactic undiplomatic diplomat. Retief is sort of the embodiment of all the best things in man, and while he was a force for good, he was never above bending the rules a bit to get the job done (though nothing that would contradict the Virtues!).
The books themselves I recommend highly. They are science fiction with a strong satirical edge to them. The author, Keith Laumer, was himself a diplomat (Third Secretary) to Rangoon and used his experience to come up with tons of hilarious material.
If interested, I'd recommend his earlier stuff like: "Retief and the Warlords". I just wish Avatar had a Haterakian Neuronic Sensitizer... Oh, wait a minute... Time Stop!

I agree with you. My first Avatar was named simply Great Avatar, and predictably when he died and I decided to begin all over the game (it was Ultima VI) I called him Great Avatar II. Not much original, eh? You know, it was even my first computer RPG, didn't know what to expect from it. I slowly realized that the Avatar was not only a moving sprite, but a true Character, and then something happened to my hard disk. I had to reinstall the game. Since I was going to play again from the beginning I tought it was a good occasion to give my Avatar a "real" name, and I came up with Jaal Harik, wich I used for other ultimas, but NOT for other games. On the contrary, playing other games I usually call my characters "Avatar", or something related. Now I'm playing again all Ultimas from VI to VIII,waiting for chapter IX, and I'm going to call him Ashar, the name I chose for me as a dragon.

This seems one of the more populae threads recently that doesn't involve abuse or criticism. :-)
I first got into the Ultimas with U3, and as a young boy I was rather interested in Inspector Gadget. So my U3 characters were, if I remember correctly, Gadget (maybe a paladin?), Penny (female ranger), Brains (cleric) and Dr Claw (thief).
When I got U4, I figured out that you could 'select' the character class you wanted by answering the questions relating to a particular Virtue in favour of the others, and so I always chose a Paladin. (By default I was normally a Bard.) My Paladin's name was K'Lavitar (also an AD&D character of mine), but even though it appeared fine on the screen roster, whenever people addressed me in conversation, the r would be left off the end (game obviously didn't like 9 letter character names).
U5 certainly didn't, and would only allow you to enter 8 letter names, so I chose Berannon, who was my AD&D ranger at the time, and to set matters straight, I went back and played U4 again with Berannon (as a paladin, because I liked magic axes) to 'formalise' it as my choice of Avatar name.
I've used Berannon ever since, in every single Ultima, as my Avatar's name. It gives it a real feeling of continuity for me - it makes me feel like it's ME there (the Britannian aspect of me), engaging in high adventure and always having a great time.
For the UOL test, I used Cyan Paladin Dragon, because that's what most people would recognise me as, but also, in UOL you're not the Avatar, and I don't know if it's 'appropriate' to use your Avatar name there. <smile>
In my opinion, one of the hardest apsects of the Ultima games wasn't where to find that one key, it was what to name you Avatar! So I've decided to start compiling a list of favorite Avatar names which I will periodically repost. So if you are having trouble thinking of a good heroic name, are looking for something new, or just want to get to know the Avatars of your fellow adventurers, I hope this list will be of help. I'm starting the list with the names that I use myself and the names of Ultima charcters I have used in past Ultima games. My Favourite Ultima name of all time has got to be: Jynx. I like it. I don't know why I like it, I just do. I suppose I find it somewhat catchy in some ways. I never use 'Jynx' in other games though.
In U7 BG & FoV my Avatar was named Roland a historical figure who was Charlemagne's greatest Paladin-Knight. In U7 SI & SS The Avatar was a female named Roxanna
I have always used Caantar. In my mind he is THE Avatar. I have used his name since I first encountered the Ultima series.
Not that others don't think of their characters as the Avatar, but using the same name through out the whole series seems to add a dimension of existence to the story. Your character becomes more than just orc fodder to throw around. He now has history and depth. And you have friends in Brittania that remember you.
Caantar was a Paladin though. In UOL I will be using playing more along the lines of bard or tinker. You will see me then as Galem Thawn.

Arwen was the daughter of Elrond, Evenstar of her people, and arguably the most beautiful of elven maidens. She was indeed married to Aragorn Elessar at the Field of Cormallen, at the end of LOTR. Her father decreed that "none less than the King of Gondor and Lord of Arnor" should have her hand in marriage. You can tell I've read far too much Tolkien lately..
Well, I put this one off for quite awhile but here it goes. My favorite name for my avatar is Melon. Yes, it is silly, but it make the conversations in most of the ultimas quite humorous. :-) "Hail MELON! Well met!" etc... If I want to be more serious though I use a name from one of my more favorite AD&D characters, Telmar.
