ZZZZZZ 3.0 plays in Dutch Comp. Chess Champ. 1993

It scored 3 out of 6 in the first six rounds and 2 out of 5
in the last 5 rounds.
Thanks to answers to my request for 'processors needed for ZZZZZZ 3.0',
ZZZZZZ 3.0 was able to play parallel on 5 machines: three IBM
RS6000 machines (32H/32Mb, 730/32Mb, 330/32Mb) and two 66 Mhz 80486/32Mb
machines. Of course, faster processing power does not compensate
for the lacking positional knowledge of the program, as is evident from
the comments below.
It is the same version as the public domain version, but with
BISHOP_SCORE (3 * 350)
KNIGHT_SCORE (3 * 350)
ROOK_SCORE (3 * 550)
QUEEN_SCORE (3 * 1100)
because in the previous rounds it exchanged too easily a piece for
three pawns.
Chessmate - ZZZZZZ 3.0 1 - 0
ZZZZZZ won a piece in the middlegame with a simple combination and
got a winning position. ZZZZZZ got in time trouble however, because
I failed to adhere to rule number 1 when playing computer chess tournaments:
never change the program! In the previous version I had to enter
the 'GameTimeUsed' in seconds, which was of course a bit inconvenient
and error prone, so I had changed that to minutes. I also changed the
GAME_MARGIN from 300 seconds to 5 minutes, but, of course, now the program
thought that GAME_MARGIN was 5 seconds! So ZZZZZZ lost on time.
Hector 2 - ZZZZZZ 3.0 1 - 0
ZZZZZZ was out of the opening book after d4xc5. It did not recapture,
because d1xd8 e8xd8 loses the castling rights, and instead of that
it played the delaying horizon move Nf6-g4?. ZZZZZZ is than a pawn down.
In the endgame ZZZZZZ might have had a chance for a draw if it played Ra2xa4,
but it switched to the king side: Ra2-a3, followed by Ra3xg3 and
then it could not stop the white free pawns.
Adding some endgame knowledge ('the king pawns are weak
anyway, so it is no use eating them now') should solve this problem.
ZZZZZZ 3.0 - Rookie 0.86 1 - 0
The opening is not handled very well by ZZZZZZ, and Rookie gets a very
good position. Rookie should have played Bg7-h6, but plays Be6-g4 instead,
which gives ZZZZZZ a chance to come back. The position after Rc2xc1 is
drawn, but (due to a bug in Rookie) ZZZZZZ wins another pawn after Kf6-f6?
and wins.
Shortchess - ZZZZZZ 3.0 1 - 0
ZZZZZZ runs into problems because it does not castle: Nh6-f7 Bc4xf7
Ke8xf7 loses castling rights! Adding king safety code instead
of the castling bonus should solve this problem. The middle game
position is very complicated after Qh6-g7. After an exchange of some
material ZZZZZZ has a slightly better endgame because of it has a better
knight, but after b5-b4? the endgame is a draw. But not after Rf8-b8, which
opens up the position. ZZZZZZ misses the clear winning move b3-b2! (the
promotion is just outside the horizon. Adding promotion moves to the
quiescence search should solve this problem.) and ends up in an endgame
with one pawn down.
The position was declared lost after consulting Ken Thompson's endgame
database.
ZZZZZZ 3.0 - Shess 1 - 0
ZZZZZZ gets a winning position after Nf3-g5! and the game is over quickly.
