I finally got a FIDE Rating

I competed in the "Best of the West Class Championship" in Santa Clara
California this weekend.

While I did not do well, it seems fairly certain that I got a FIDE
rating from this event. This is because I already had 8 FIDE rated
games. It takes 9 so I was one short.

It seems that I need to have 3 FIDE rated opponents for an event to be
FIDE ratable, so I could not just play one game and get my FIDE
rating. Since all 4 of my opponents have a FIDE rating, it seems that
I now have 12 FIDE rated games.

Here are the games. My game against Michael Wang shows that if a
player responds to my Deadly Dangerous Damiano's Defense with normal
moves, I can at least equalize. I came close to winning this game but
he held on for a draw.

Wow, allowing a skewer of your queen in one move. Thanks for the laughs, "worst of the west".

Speaking of laughs, Ray, that's a fork, not a skewer.

Judging by the quality of these games, Mr. Sloan appears to have dropped dramatically in strength. I can remember a time when his games, posted here, showed Mr. Sloan to be a much tougher opponent. Then again, he could have simply been in terrible form here and yet refused to withdraw, for whatever reason.

Regarding the last of these games above: never take the Queen's Knight's pawn with your Queen! I learned this from a Fred Reinfeld book, specifically written for people who had just learned how the pieces move.

Not to pick nits with a nitpick, but what is a skewer in your dictionary, dick? I think a broken pin equals an x-ray equals a skewer? Kind of like your belly equals a 'round robin' (or entire penguin)? The transitive property, remember senile senior citizen?

How much was it?

My FIDE rating should appear here in about a week:

Not a high rating I must admit, but a rating nevertheless.

I take it that Mr. Sloan's opponents in the first two rounds did not have FIDE ratings, and that is probably why those two games were excluded above.

I let the chess engine 'Houdini' have a look at these games, and will post the results later.
This program spots blunders effortlessly, but when giving numerical evaluations it mistakenly assumes that any repetition yields a position eval of zero, or draw-by-threefold-repetion. Of course, either player may vary and thus the correct eval should assumme best play, and only score a draw (or zero) when such a claim could legally be made. I believe this may not be unique to Houdini, but is some sort of built-in flaw in the GUI-- a Sannyesque flaw in which the laws of chess are flagrantly ignored by programmers, when convenient.

The FIDE website still does not show this result for Mr. Sloan. His two previous results were just above, and below, the FIDE 2000 mark. With (at least) two rounds of results missing from Mr. Sloan's top post, I am merely guessing, but these other game results would appear to be a heavy drag on his final average rating. My guess is that Mr. Sloan would do well to avoid strong players and stick to beating up on 'weakies.'
