28th December 2009 – 6th January 2010
(12 december) LAST NEWS !: Gata Kamsky in Reggio Emilia substitute for
Vladimir Malakhov
15th November 2009 – A new, great edition of the oldest Italian closed
chess tournament will start on Monday, 28th December, in Reggio Emilia
in the classic venue of the Hotel Mercure-Astoria (maps and directions
here) with free admission. Ten top chess players will fight through
Wednesday, 6th January, for the 52nd title of King of the “Torneo di
Capodanno”. The official web site has the Hall of Fame of the
tournament, that has seen the participation of all the top world chess
players of the last half century (with the sole exception of Bobby
Fischer), as well as all the results of the various editions and all
the games for download. The rest day, missing since the 40th edition
(1997-98), has been reintroduced: no games will be played on 1st
January, allowing players to enjoy the New Year’s Day with no fear to
influence their performance on the “battlefield”.
And finally, the tournament: a great competition that will surely find
its place in history as it will see four over-2500 Italian chess
players (an absolute first) opposing six strong Grand Masters (GM)
from Eastern Europe. The FIDE category of this 52nd edition,
determined by the average value of the international ranking (Elo) of
the participants, is by just a hair the 15th (average Elo 2625 points,
a mere 10 point short of the 16th category), with the Grand Master
norm set at 4½ points.
This edition will also be memorable because of the first participation
of Fabiano Caruana, 17-years-old great Italian talent currently 81st
in the FIDE world ranking list. By now Fabiano plays steadily on a par
with the strongest world chess players, and he looks into a future of
great opportunities. Before and after the “Torneo di Capodanno”,
Fabiano has to face two very tough appointments. From 20th November to
15th December will play in the World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Siberia,
where 128 players will fight to qualify for the final phase of next
world championship cycle. From 15th January to 31st January, then,
Fabiano will play in the Group A tournament (FIDE 19th category!) of
the “Corus” super-tournaments in Wijk aan Zee (Holland), qualified by
last year’s victory in Group B tournament. He will face players of the
calibre of Anand, Carlsen, Kramnik, Ivanchuk, etc. Good luck, Fabiano!
Defending the Italian colours in Reggio Emilia will also be Michele
Godena, the most prominent Italian player and real veteran of the
“Torneo di Capodanno”, at the tenth participation in Reggio Emilia;
Daniele Vocaturo, freshly appointed Grand Master, at the second
participation to the “Torneo di Capodanno” as player (plus last year’s
participation as game commentator for the audience), and Sabino
Brunello, in search of his third and final Grand Master norm, at the
second participation in Reggio Emilia as well.
Among the six foreign Grand Masters there will be the winner of the
Jubilee edition, the Hungarian Zoltan Almasi (third time in Reggio in
a row), but not last year’s winner, the Chinese Ni Hua, replaced by
the Georgian GM Baduur Jobava, at his début in Reggio. The Russian GM
Konstantin Landa (winner of the 48th edition) will be at his fifth
participation in a row. Back in Reggio after an absence of 12 years is
the Moldavian GM Viktor Bologan, who came very close to win the 39th
edition. Top scorer of the tournament will be the Russian GM Vladimir
Malakhov. Last but not least, an emerging young Azerbaijan GM, and
fellow citizen of Garry Kasparov, the 17-years-old Eltaj Safarli.

Caruana, Kamsky, and Safarli win in Reggio Emilia R1
All wins achieved with the black pieces
Report by Chessdom.com
The 52nd Reggio Emilia chess tournament had an exciting start with 50%
decisive games in round 1, all of them with the black pieces. The
local favorite and Corus 2010 participant Fabiano Caruana outplayed
the tactician Viktor Bologan. The Candidate matches 2010 player Gata
Kamsky had a comfortable game against Daniele Vocaturo, while the
Chessdom.com commentator Eltaj Safarli defeated Sabino Brunello.
Round 1 results
Sabino Brunello - Eltaj Safarli 0-1
Konstantin Landa - Baadur Jobava 1/2-1/2
Viktor Bologan - Fabiano Caruana 0-1
Zoltan Almasi - Michele Godena 1/2-1/2
Daniele Vocaturo - Gata Kamsky 0-1
The 52nd Reggio Emilia tournament is scheduled to take place from 28th
December 2009 until 6th January 2010. What started as small local
tournament back in 1958, sprouted into prominent happening by the
early 90's, when both Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov sat on the
stage. List of the Reggio Emilia winners is outstanding, Viswanathan
Anand, Anatoly Karpov, Nona Gaprindashvili, Lajos Portish, Ulf
Andersson, Rafael Vaganian, to mention a few.
This year's edition is the final practice for Vocaturo, Kamsky, and
Caruana, all of them to participate in Corus Chess 2010 in Wijk Aan
Zee.

Judit Polgar - [apparently told 'chessdom.com' {in an interview}] that

Interview for the World Cup official website
At the World Cup 2009 Judit Polgar started the competition in the second
round - her first round opponent could not come due to illness. "I got
an opportunity to have some rest after the trip, for acclimatization and
to get some energy" - Judit said - "This was very important before the
game against the best Romanian chess player Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu" (ed.
note - Judit won that match after tiebreaks 4.5-3.5). Excerpt from the
official website.
Q: Are you usually nervous before a game?
Judit Polgar: It depends on my preparation. I think that it is somehow
good to be nervous before a game. To my mind if you are not nervous -
you don't care that much on the result.
Q: Who was helping you to prepare for the Cup?
Judit Polgar: I don't have permanent coaches, but there are people who
help me. For instance, it is Lev Psakhis, we have been working for a
long time already. Plus, my husband always accompanies me at the
tournaments. He is not good in chess as he is in his profession, he is
an animal doctor. On the other hand, he always supports me morally,
perhaps this is the most important. He likes to watch my games keeping
his fingers crossed.
Judit Polgar....
Q: We know that you were temporary out of big sport and took care of the
family. What made you come back?
Judit Polgar: I cannot live without chess! It is an integral part of my
life. I enjoy the game!
Q: Is it difficult to be successful in life and in chess?
Judit Polgar: Extremely difficult! You should be good mother, good wife,
and good professional too. To be the best in all! Every day!
I had to give up chess for some period. When my son was born, it was
clear that children are most important. So, chess disappeared from my
life for some period. But later I wanted to play again and I have been
trying very hard over the last couple of years to come back and to
become the best again. I am concentrating on chess and trying to work
more I have a lot of ambitions, just difficult to fullfil them all.
Q: Do you follow the women's chess?
Judit Polgar: Yes, I follow some women's tournaments and from time to
time I participate in them. Women's chess develops very fast, female
chess players become stronger and stronger. But anyway there is a big
gap between men and women players. Comparatively few women chess players
work on their professionalism, hire coaches, and use the computer base
Perhaps there will be good changes in future. But for the moment
professional woman chess player is an unusual phenomenon.
Q: Did you teach your children chess?
Judit Polgar: No, they just like to play with pieces. No one will be
surprised if I say that my father promotes this. I hope in future they
will like to play chess, but I don't think that they will follow my
path. I just don't have this fanatic energy which their grandfather had.
Q: So, Polgar the father is not eager to grow up another generation of
chess champions?
Judit Polgar: Maybe he is. The question is if children and their parents
want this. Children take a grandfather a bit differently than parents.
And my husband is not delighted that his children will follow my way. He
knows well how hard our profession is. Though every profession is hard
if to take it professionally.
Q: What do your sisters do now in life?
Judit Polgar: Sofia lives in Israel now. She likes art, paintings. And
she teaches chess via Internet. Susan is a co-chairperson of FIDE
Women's chess committee. She likes it. I try to stay away from politics
in general and chess politics in particular.
Q: Are you famous in Hungary?
Judit Polgar: Yes, sometimes they recognize me. It started in 1988 when
our team won the Olympiad. Though in general chess in Hungary is not
that famous. People think they are not smart enough to start learning
chess. That is why I excluded chess diagrams from the book about me
which has been published in Hungary.
Q: Do they buy your book?
Judit Polgar: Yes, I could not even expect that it will raise such an
interest. I can say that with publication of my book I became more
popular.

lot on this website.
Also Black seems to be doing well until 28..f5. The opening of the

He once again proved that he is a top notch player. Once he can become
a little bit more consistent, he will break the 2700 barrier. The
difference between Fabiano and Gata or Zoltan is the loss to Vocaturo,
who basically lost to everyone else.
