Why the USA is no aerea for chess?
=============================

Read yourself the interesting thread in the actual rgcm. I found a nice
proof for the theory. Don't take this as an offense, please.

I give you the final moves of an important game of American history of
chess. It's from 1915 and it's called the "preachment on foraging", "which
means that White cut his own throat by thoughtlessly grabbing pawns"
(Arnold Denker).

It's not that Denker repeated a false judgement about a beautiful game, but
that nobody ever analysed the position carefully enough to oppose Denker
and many before him.

Believe me, compared with Denker, I'm a real patzer. Perhaps I had detected
the wrongness of that judgement but this is not probable because normally
only the real masters see with a glimplse of their eyes that there's
something in the air. Here, you had first of all to forget about the normal
authority of a famous expert. So you had to risk to be judged as an
*outsider* or *fool* if in the end you couldn't prove your ideas. In the
USA *only* Bobby Fischer had such a class to see moves that a whole
assembly of experts didn't see and so judged Fischer's position as probably
lost. But as you will remember it was Robert Byrne who forfeited
immediately after Rf6 ... :)

And today I should be the star to oppose Denker?

No panic, please. You can relax. It's only my little Crafty engine in CB7.

Kg1 Qc2 Re1 Rf1 Bd3 Be3 Pa3 b2 c4 f2 g3 h2;
Kh8 Qe5 Ra8 Rf3 Bb7 Bd6 Pa5 b6 c7 d7 e6 g7 BTM

18...Raf8 19.Bxb6 "thoughtlessly grabs pawns; a closer examination reveals
that W is lost in this position." (Denker)

19...Qh5 20.Be3 Qh3 21.Be4 R8f5 22.Bxf5 "Santasiere did a lovely oil of
this position" (Denker)
22...Qg2+ 0-1

After the following moves of Crafty you might assume that this end of the
"practice" game between Smyth and Helms is a real picture only. Created for
a beauty contest.

First of all Black had a clear Mate before. Why didn't he play that?
Because he already saw the final Qg2?? Very improbable.

20...Bg3 21.fg3 Rg3 with a quick Mate.

But then look at this. 20.Be4! gives White a positional advantage.

And to make the confusion complete about the artificial end of the game
White could have won with 19.Bf4, at least he could have prevented the
dangerous attack.

What does that mean?

Is it good to know that Santasiere could have saved much time if he had
*not* to paint the picture?

I would say the beauty of chess is not affected by such corrections of the
machines.

Mankind is simply moving on into higher levels. Another level means a
different kind of beauty.

What does that mean for the USA in particular?

real World Champion! Without class and without beauty.<<===
