AEGON NEWS

Ingo Althofer of Jena University has been experimenting for some time
with his Drie-Hirn concept for computer chess.

Dreihirn means literally 'three-brains', a symbiosis of human and
machine thinking.

In chess 3-hirn consists of two different chess computers, the slaves, and
one human coordinator, the master. When 3-hirn has to make a move, the
master starts both machines and watches over their process of computing.

After some time he stops them and inspects their move proposals. If both
programs suggest the same move, the master is forced to execute this move.
If the programs suggest different moves, the master will decide which
one to play.

From 1985 Althofer has performed several 3-hirn experiments in chess.
His results are listed below.

Year Strengths of prgs Opponent No of games ELO of 3-hirn
==== ================= ======== =========== =============
1985 1500 and 1500 club players 20 1720
1987 1800 and 1800 strong club plyrs 20 2100
1989 1960 and 2090 IM, ELO 2400 8 2250
1992 2230 and 2260 IMs, FMs and cptrs 25 2500
1993 2250 and 2260 humans, AEGON 6 2400
1994 2230 and 2260 humans, Clodra 6 2550
1995 2450 and 2390 GM Lutz, ELO 2575 8 2525
1996 2370 and 2370 humans, AEGON 6 ????

Althofer's strength has been around 1900-1950 during this period.

Of course, we should beware of small samples, but the results
suggest that the 3-hirn concept, as used by a 1950 player, adds
around 200-300 ELO to the average rating performance.

What programs did/does he use?

It varies, usually the strongest pair on the rating list, I think.

At the recent AEGON he used Mchess and Genius together.

I've given him an experimental version of Chess System Tal to try.
My suggestion to him was to use a deep brute forcer like Fritz (or
a lesser extent Genius), together with a maniac like CS-Tal.
It might make for intersting chess - we will see.

Not right, in AEGON he was plaing with MChess Pro 5.0 and Rebel 7.0
on two slow 486/100 Notebooks.

I thought he told me Mchess and Genius when I spoke to him at AEGON,
didn't write it down at the time, so maybe I was wrong ..... ?
