In 3-Hirn two different chess computers are coordinated by a human player:
If the computers propose different moves the coordinator makes the final
choice between these proposals. The coordinator also organizes timing and
permanent brain of the machines.

In 1992 3-Hirn played its first match against a computer opponent. At
Paderborn University Rainer Feldmann and Peter Mysliwietz had been
developing ZUGZWANG, a massively parallel chess program. They wanted to
participate in the 1992 AEGON tournament, and before this event we made
a sparring under AEGON time conditions which were 120 minutes for the whole
game per side in that year. 10 games were played in 3 days !! And I was
completely exhausted afterwards. Nevertheless I managed to beat ZUGZWANG
which ran on 256 INMOS transputers by 7.5 to 2.5 ( +7 =1 -2 ). In most of
the games I was very successful in keeping tactics outside ( by careful
choice of the openings and of the moves in general ), outplaying ZUGZWANG
strategically. However, in the game listed below I was taken down in an
open position.

Date: 03.05.1992
White: 3-Hirn ( Mephisto Lyon 68030, Chessmachine TheKing 16 MHz, I.Althoefer )
Black: ZUGZWANG

1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3 Bb4 5.d4 exd4 6.Nxd4 0-0 7.Bd3 Ne5 8.Be2 d5
9.cxd5 Nxd5 10.Bd2 Bxc3 11.bxc3 Qg5 12.g3 Qe7 13.e4 Nb6 14.0-0 Bh3 15.Re1 Rad8
16.Qc2 h6 17.Rab1 Rfe8 18.Be3 Ned7 19.f3 Ne5 20.Qb3 c5 21.Nc2 Qf6 22.f4 Nd3
23.Bxd3 Rxd3 24.Qb5 Rd7 25.Bxc5 Qxc3 26.Nd4 Rc8 27.Bxb6 axb6 28.Nb3 Rd3 29.Re2
Rcd8 30.Rbe1 Rd1 31.Kf2 Bg4 32.Re3 Qb2+ 33.R3e2 R8d2 34.h4 Rxe2+ 35.Rxe2 Qb1
36.Nd4 Rf1+ 37.Ke3 Qc1+ 38.Rd2 Re1+ 39.Kd3 Rg1 40.Nf3 Qf1+ and White resigned
at move 54.

The game was played to the very end to simulate AEGON conditions where several
human participants also fight until they are mated.

After 11. ... Qg5 I realized that I would not succeed in keeping the position
closed. Probably 13.e4 was a big blunder, opening everything. By 19.f3 I tried
to build a fort but it was already too late. After 22.f4 I was rather sure
to lose: The position was open and ZUGZWANG was much stronger in tactics than
my machines. Perhaps Deep Blue would have liked such a position against Kaspa-
rov ( from either side ).

In my next contribution ( to be posted around mid April ) I will present a
typical 3-Hirn win against ZUGZWANG.
