World Open has been moved to Arlington Virginia
|
| |
After nearly 40 years in Philadelphia, the World Open has been moved
to Arlington Virginia. I do not know the reason for the move but there
have been obvious problems with the Philadelphia locations.
This will be the 41st World Open. The first few World Opens were held
in New York City but by about 1978 they had been moved to Philadelphia... more »

HEY - What fool opening is this ???
|
| |
I just had someone play 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5? against me as white
where I'm sure I handled the opening badly, and things just
went downhill from there.
What the xxx is going on with this opening?
Please give a plan for white to smash the clown playing that in a few moves.

New FIDE Player Licensing Requirements
|
| |
Kirsan Ilyumzhinov keeps being re-elected each time because the third-
world countries, especially the African countries, vote for him, A
majority of the European Countries have always voted against Kirsan.
The Africans will support this licensing requirement because they know
that they will not have to pay anything. FIDE gives money to the... more »

Kasparov comments live

I find this interesting, not for the contents of the analysis,
but its superficiality. Kasparov's analysis is the same as
any duffer's! "Let's see, white moves the rook here, then
black plays this, that looks all right... but black might play
this other move, I don't like that... How about the knight to... more »

Did Fischer work at McDonald's ?
|
| |
I just finished reading Frank Brady's biography about Robert James Fischer called "Profile of a Prodigy" In the book, the author writes that Fischer dropped out of high school to play chess professionally.
Nowadays I guess making a living playing chess is not so much a struggle because of the Internet and numerous tournaments paying huge prizes and appearance fees. Your average American GM like is probably earning high income. But I was wondering back in the 60s and 70s if making a chess living was hard. In the book, Fischer played in a couple tournaments each year and he was living in NYC. New York City has some of the of the largest rents. For example, you can pay sometimes over $3000/month just for a 1 bedroom apartment. Did he do any jobs to make ends meet? It was probably difficult finding a job without a college degree. I read once that Samuel Reshevsky worked as an accountant and William Addison worked as a doctor when they were not being chess professionals. What did Fischer do? Did he work as a bartender, or at a McDonald's, or as a courier, or maybe even a lounge pianist to make ends meet? Lots of Hollywood celebrities work odd jobs to make a living before they get discovered and make a good living. Just wondering what Fischer did before he made it big.... more »
