I have a clue for you on what these doubles mean. Hockey has a
location, 2 words, and one of the words is what these doubles are.
I would say, the most likely cendidate here is that you have a
balanced hand, too strong for a 1NT opening.
Or something equivalent... probably Hx or better in clubs with extra-
strength.

This one is clearly for penalties.
Simply because nothing else makes any sense.
Often played conventionally as TO of clubs, but it could be used as
penalty, since doubler is behind the club bidder.

Penalty (doubler is behind the diamond bidder)
1S-P-1N-P
2C-2D-P-P

would show cards, with doubler in front of the suit bidder.

Standard for both is penalty.
Common (?) for the first is takeout.
Possible (?) for the second is card-showing + do something intelligent
partner.

A matter of system agreement I would think.
The first double would definitely be takeout for me.
Opener has approx 5(34)1 shape.
The second double would be penalties. Opener has defined his shape within
fairly close limits, so responder should not really need a takeout double.
And the 2D bidder is stepping into a very dangerous auction - didn't
overcall in the first place, the opponents haven't found a fit. I would
like to be able to punish this person!
I guess the essential difference is that in the first auction there are 2
unbid suits; in the second auction only 1.

Opener has something like
AJ874
KQ96
K4
KJ
and is inviting game in NT or hearts.
Responder can pass with
6
A84
KJ87
T8654
It is a negative, takeout, penalty, and responsive double all in one.
So whichever meaning partner may construe is correct.

Some small difference, essentially the same idea.

That looks natural to me. I would expect doubler to have hearts and
diamonds.
First one subject of agreement, some non-penalty type I should think would
work best since there are still hearts and diamonds unbid.
Second one is penalty.
I prefer takeout on the first and penalty on the second. On the
second, if your rho is an old palooka, you had better anticipate their
runout to spades before you pound. Primary spades is the default rule
in old fashioned standard American for 2D. I held QJT87xx-xx-AQxx-void
the last time I butted in with 2D in this auction.

So, what, Old Palookas are good players now? I always thought you were
being self-deprecatory; now it appears you are big-noting yourself.
