Partner and I have been playing 2-Way game try, where after 1M - 2M

- new suit by 1M bidder shows shortness and
- next suit (2S/2N) asks what suit P would accept a game try in.

We are wondering if there is an approach that keeps this structure and
allows 1M bidder to specifically ask P for shortness?

Or, ir not, what about if 2N

(a) asks for P to show either shortness or a cluster of honours (no
differentiation), or

(b) asks just for shortness?

What would do you think is the most useful approach?

I have played what you describe plus 1S-3C/3D/3H or 1H-2N/3C/3D to be an
invitational splinter (1H-2N=spade splinter). That way responder or
opener can show shortage which covers most situations.

Of course that begs the question as to what is your strong raise and
the follow ups.

2N is a raise to 3+ in the major, then
-3C = would pass a raise to 3 with 3D last train try
-3D/H/S = shortage (trumps = short clubs)
-4C/D/H = second suit
-4M = aould not pass a raise to 3 but not much extra
-3N = all other balanced hands

Immediate double Jumps = 7 loser splinters
Immediate 3N = 6 loser splinter (ask with 3C)
