I held

QTxx
Kxxx
ATx
AJ

and partner, a client, opened a short club. 2S by RHO, so I doubled.
Partner bid 3C, so I bid 3NT. The lead was the DJ.

J
AQxx
Kx
KQTxxx

QTxx
Kxxx
ATx
AJ

Ok, why did she not bid hearts? No idea!

Anyway, I won the DK and ran a few clubs. West discarded a heart and
two diamonds, then the SA.

Now I was fully awake! Not a 5-0 heart break? Good bid partner!

West, of course, has been strip-squeezed, so four rounds of hearts put
him in to give me the DT for my twelfth! He grunted and wrote 0 as an
estimate and Fix next to it!

At the end of the night I was surprised to find it was an average,
plus Deep says 6NT is cold! It turned out that the other scores were:

4Sx-4
4Sx-4
4Hx-1
4Hx-1

I am sure 4H is cold but that is not the point. I also realised you
can rectify the count since West's SA is singleton then squeeze him in
the reds. Goodness knows why people reached 4S with a trump suit of
K9xxxx opposite A.

Surely RHO had seven spades? And you don't give the vulnerability, but if it was your side vul and the opponents NV, players who are as insane as I am may have bid 4S (instead of 2S) just because they had seven of them. Players who are even more insane than that may bid 4S at other vulnerabilities.

If LHO has pitched the SA can't you just exit a spade as well? You've
pitched 2 hearts and 2 spades on the clubs, but would still have 6
clubs, 1 spade, 3 hearts, and 2 diamonds.

Aren't mysteries like this the fun part of playing with clients?

What did the TD say when you called him because there were only 12
spades in this deck?

True - but the only people who I would have thought might bid 4S were
myself and a couple of players who were not there that night. The
trouble with the vulnerability is that I cannot remember [since it did
not really affect me] but I think I would have remembered Red [v v nv].
My guess is that it was White [nv v vn].

At the risk of again looking VERY foolish.......

I have 6C, 2D, 3H (if my arithmetic is correct that's 11 tricks).

I pitch two heart and two spades fromm hand on dummy's clubs. Have I
given up anything by making these pitches? Is there something better
that involves coming down to just one spade?

Now when the Spade Ace is discarded I have a 12th trick is spades just
by playing one. Nothing fancy or convoluted.

OK....what did I miss?

Nothing. Anyone can play hands better than me when they know all the
hands: Deep Finesse does it all the time.

I pitched spades to keep hearts: it was not obviously wrong, and since
I made twelve tricks and you make twelve tricks, not so obviously
inferior.
