Not surprisingly, there are 3 passes to you. You open a strong club,
and the auction proceeds thus:
1c(1) 1d(2)
1h(3) 2d(4)
2s(5) 3c(6)
??
1c = strong, 16+ unbalanced or 17+ balanced
1d = 0-7
1h = nonforcing, too awkward to jump to 2h as a natural GF
2d = natural, values, shows a reason to bid. That reason could be
long diamonds in a hand like xx x QJxxxxx xxx, or near maximum values
and a 5 card diamond suit in a hand like xxx xx QTxxx Kxx. In any
event, responder could pass 1h with a bust or bid 1nt without a reason
for bidding 2d but wanting to keep the auction open
2s = natural, forcing for 1 round, extra values
3c = natural, but implying 5-5 shape since 5-4 shapes could go through
2nt and 6+ diamond one suiters could rebid 3d
At this point, it seems as though your options are
3d, undiscussed whether this is passable, so probably sub-optimal
3nt = game try
4d = forcing, but undiscussed whether it asks for key cards
5d = to play
6d = to play
At this point, what is your preference?
Partner's hand anon.

4D seems like the obvious bid. You want to communicate your slam
interest and diamond fit don't you?

Not sure that I wouldn't have jumped to 2H [we play it as a "demand"
for heart length and strength].
Anyway, to find out what we need for slam is very difficult. Assuming
partner has shown a 55 in the minors, your absolute best case scenario
is:
x
xx

If partner has the CA, his suit will be too weak to set up, since you
have only 2 ruffs available in dummy.
This is pretty much what you need to make 6D, and I do not see any way
of finding this out. So in IMPS, I simply bid 6D. In MP, I bid 3N.
Cheers,
Kurt
3NT bets that 3NT makes and 6D fails. 5D bets that 5D makes, and 3NT
doesn't get an overtrick. 6D bets that 6D makes. If you're uncertain
of your system, don't make bids that provide information to the
opponents. Bid 6D.
Fred.
3NT. To cover partner's clubs I have perhaps the fifth heart, perhaps
the spade Queen, perhaps a ruff if that doesn't totally foul
communications. I'm just not that optimistic about 12 tricks on a 5-3
fit. One problem with not jumping to 2H is that 3NT feels like a huge
underbid. But a 1H or 2c opening won't make this hand easy to bid in a
standard system.
What would be wrong with 3D is that it sounds like (and should be!) a
preference rather than a raise.
The only downside to 4D is that it won't enter partner's mind that
your singleton is the king. Other than that, he will certainly make a
slam move with a major queen. And you want him to do the asking,
since you have no values that won't show up as answers. (Except maybe
the club king again.)
Carl
By the way, wouldn't 3H on the second round be certain to lose the
spade fit if partner has 5432 and the diamond fit if he's 764532.
Hands like this need an artificial second round force looking for
partner's length, rather than his fit. In my Bluish partnership, 1H
would show 20+, no 6-card or 5-5, 2 suit would be 17-19 1-suiter,
nonforcing, and 1S would be forcing artificial with some 6+ or 5-5.
Carl
How will I know that opener is as strong as he is to induce me to ask?
The "failure" to jump LIMITS opener - and if I were partner I'd bail
at 5D. Surely my bidding has described my hand to partner - his has
not to me - so how can I be "captain"?
Cheers,
Kurt
Thanks to all who replied.
At the table, I felt that the only real options were 3nt and 6d,
because I was afraid of a misunderstanding if I had bid 4d.
Because I felt that my system had given me an advantage over the other
2/1 systems, I decided to take advantage of it and jump to 6d. I felt
that it was impossible to find the diamond fit whether I had opened 1h
or 2c in a standard context.
Luck was with me when partner had

and the ten of clubs dropped tripleton. As expected, we got a trump
lead, lose a club, trump lead, ruff a club, ace of spades, spade ruff,
draw trump, run clubs.
given that we needed the Ten third of clubs to drop, I feel certain
that I was lucky rather than good to bid 6d, and I wondered if the
rest of you would have checked out in 3nt.
Henrysun909
I thought about bidding 4d, but we didn't have firm agreements this
late in the auction, as to whether 4nt by responder would be to play
and I feared that 4d was simply a delayed 5d bid and I didn't want to
be in 5d at MPs since I felt pretty confident that we were making at
least 10 tricks in NT.
Henrysun909
?? Am I losing my mind? Don't you make with one opp holding Txxx of
clubs ?
RR
No, you're not; I am. Yes, the hand makes on any 4-3 club break.
Guess I have to wait to post until I have had a sufficiently large
amount of coffee.
