RHO You LHO Partner
1H 2C 2D 3D
5D ?
Do you pass or double ?
Does double show 2 diamond losers?
Carl.
You have your overcall but nothing extra. Only your partner knows why he
bid 3D, so let him make the decisions. If, in your methods, your side is in
Forcing Pass situation, then you cannot Pass which shows a stronger hand
than this so you are defaulted to Double, bidding on would be really wrong.
The auction indicates it is the opponents' hand but there seems to be some
worrisome worms in the auction. First, we are unfavorable and partner made
a game try (did he?). Second, opponents appear to have the majority of HCP
(do they, who is fooling around and in what way?) and yet your partner made
a game try (somebody is lying...). Interesting... I would Pass and if
partner doubles, pass again.
Raija
Why is that your only choice?
I would bid 6C as either a cheap sacrifice or a lucky make.
Eric Leong
I think that doubling with that hand, if the double is penalty
oriented, makes sense because that hand does not look very promising
offensively speaking anymore. That heart Queen and doubleton diamond
are of doubtful value. Also any finesse towards clubs seems destined
to fail. Your partnership will likely produce three to four tricks if
you defend the hand, either three spade tricks or two spades and a
club plus maybe a diamond or a heart.
BR
There are a number of questions to this non-trivial bidding sequence:
What does partner's 3D show compared to the alternative of 2H?
What would 4D (instead of 3D) have meant?
Would Pass be considered forcing in this sequence?
Was LHO 2D bid constructive and forcing or not?
Answers to these questions have a marked influence on what you should
do now.
Rainer Herrmann
Is 5D going to be passed out if you pass? I doubt it, as I suspect
that LHO is going to bid 5H (or even a slam). Even if LHO passes,
partner may bid something. And finally, if 5D is passed out, opponents
may be making 5H or even 6D. I vote for pass
It would help to know whether this is match-points or IMPs
Dave Flower
Well, that's the point, isn't it? Certainly Forcing Passes in this
situation is a common understanding, but it is also an advanced
understanding and therefore, without discussion, does not apply.
What do I do in the absence of those understandings? An interesting
question. However, partner has made a limit raise and I look to have
two quick tricks. I double. Maybe partner will pull.
Bob
A agree that there is no clear understanding as to the implications of
a pass, but, surely, there is also no clear understanding as to the
meaning of partner's 3D bid?
Dave Flower
Ad to this an earthquake, a tsunami followed by an airplane crash and
finally an asteroid heading towards earth.

Another impossible auction. RHO has an opening hand.
You have an opening hand. LHO has nearly an opening
hand. Partner cues? Are you playing with a pinochle
deck?
Looks like an unlucky hand. You have no singletons or
voids. Pass and hope you beat them. Singleton rule does
not apply. They got more points than your side does.
Unless I misread the vulnerability, you are vul so after 2 diamonds
and 2 heart tricks you are down 3 for 800. Doesn't look cheap to me
if they can make 400 in 5D.
Nick France
I'll pass. Seems to be a lot of points in the deck. I don't see why
this shows 2 or more diamonds? I have my bid and 2 winners in most
cases. Partner probably has a trick. I would understand a double but
if partner made his bid on a lot of distribution, then they might
make. Let partner make the decision. If he has his bid he should
double.
Nick France
I think we can logically determine what 3D should show (although I
would not be surprised to discover partner has misbid).
2H would be a good raise to 3C, normally 3-card support and 8-10. 3D
should be a good raise to 4C, but not enough to splinter to 4D. 3D
also denies holding a hand appropriate for a fit bid. Perhaps 3D shows
a hand like one of these:
1. xxxx, Axxx, x, Kxxx
2. KJTx, xxxx, x, Kxxx
3. KQxx, xxx, xx, Kxxx
It is far from clear we will beat 5D with any of these hands so I will
make an NF pass.
Andrew
Andrea, you are heading to the four levela with 8-10, moreover you are
vulnerable, they are not, they are bidding on crap.
My two lire.
:-)
BR
If matchpoints I double, hoping to beat them perhaps 2 to keep our
equity in 4C. I do not think we are risking much if they make.
If IMPs I pass, hoping to beat them. I have no equity to protect, but
am delighted to pass if partner should double. This cannot be a
forcing pass because we have not forced to game on power.

Side issue:
Partner could also have cuebid 2H!
( instead of 3D! ) .
a) Would that also have shown Cl support ?
b) If so, is one cuebid stronger than the other?
You see, 2H! only forces to 3C whereas
3D! forces to 4C ( if Opener had passed ).

No clear understanding, but surely not a Yarborough. And, under the
old S.J. Simon dictum of half a loaf, let's see if we can go plus.
Bob
N o one else seems to have noticed this. The same vulnerability that
would make this a forcing pass were that agreement in place makes it
appear that they are stretching, not us.
Of course, you can choose to believe the opponents rather than
partner, but that's worse than losing bridge.

When an opponent is blasting to game in a competitive auction when our
side holds about the half the hcp one would think he has extra
distribution to compensate. If should be clear from the auction that
LHO has 5+ diamonds and RHO has five diamonds for his bid.
Consequently, it is extremely improbable partner has two losing
diamonds. More likely, partner has a diamond void if LHO bid 2D with
six diamonds.
Further, the opponent's bidding suggests partner has 5+ spades. Also,
partner's 3D bid say he has defense as well has offensive tricks.
Here is a lucky type hand where the opponents can make 5D and your
side can make 6C for a 1770 swing.

Also, even if you are minus -500 when the opponents can make 400 it is
hardly a great loss but the opponents can not peek at our cards they
just might bid on to take insurance so you will be +50 instead of -400
for a 450 swing. Further, LHO might find the wrong lead like a diamond
which allows you to make so instead of down one for -100 you are +1370
for a 1470 swing.
I may be wrong on this particular time but I certainly want to set
myself up to be lucky.
Eric Leong
That fact had occurred to me.
Andrew
That's why I asked what 4D would heave meant :-)
Rainer Herrmann
IMO your partner misbid. He should bid 4D which is a less ambiguous
description of his strength, although he still has extras even on that
sequence. 4D creates a force to 5C and so should also creates a
forcing pass when the opponents bid over your game to 5D. Your hand
with no diamond wastage and a full opener is easily worth a forcing
pass and his hand is worth 6C after your forcing pass.
In practice, this is far too sophisticated an understanding to apply
in most pick up partnerships. However, it's interesting to think about
how this situation might be handled in an expert partnership.
