Me RHO Partner LHO
Pass 1D (5+) 2C Pass
2H Pass 3D Pass
??
I held: T8xx, AKTxx, Q9, xx
What's partner doing? What should I do now?
(He's a very strong player, but we've never discussed this situation,
although we certainly did afterwards)
Bid 3NT since he's asking for help in diamonds and you have it.

A good hand, unsure of direction. Or a very good hand with a known
direction, in which case it's his job to clarify later.
For now, my choice is 3NT, which will be a fine contract opposite a good
club suit and (say) the diamond ace. Siding may be crucial, and we may be
making nothing much if they have diamonds to run anyway. If he's coming in
hearts (unlikely, with my original pass) then he can bid hearts anyway. I
don't think he's likely to have spades - he might have bid them.

Trust p to have dia A or Jxx , Trust and u may be lucky :)
I bid 3NT.
Without agreements, I believe he is looking for half stopper in diamonds.
If he had spades and clubs, he would have bid spades over the 2H advance.
If his intention was to make a forcing call with good hand for hearts, then
he will show that over 3NT.
I need two pieces of information before deciding:
1) Was 2H forcing ? Constructive ? (And how weak could 2C be?)
2) Where was this hand played. (The poster's name and the existence of
a quote in German on their profile suggest Germany)
Dave Flower
1. 2H is constructive (passed hand); 2C is sound (unfavorable
vulnerability, IMPs)
2. Wilmington, Delaware (the opponents were playing Polish Club, or
said so)
No D-stop, what helps partner to the 'right' game? 3S on 108xx?
yuuuk! 3H on 'good' 5xH? OK.
3NT. What else? You can't pass. If the most likely game is not 3NT,
partner is going to clarify his 3D bid.
Eric Leong
3NT because partners most likely hands include one where 3NT is right
and he will bid over 3NT on most of the others.

I would have passed 2C. 2H works when overcaller has
three hearts. But if the hands don't fit 2C may be your
final plus contract.
In your auction, it's 3NT on momentum. I think it's
much less than 50%, but no other spot is a sure plus
score.
Forcing you to bid.
> What should I do now?
Bid.
You can't really tell what partner is doing at this point, but you
have to assume (until proven otherwise) that he's looking for 3NT.
Since I have a half-stopper, I'm not going to bid 3NT on my own, but I
think I'd try 3S, giving him a chance to bid 3NT with a half-stopper
in his own hand.
