Poker was counted by sessions (i.e. regular Monday night group, etc.) not by
hands or type of poker game.

Cribbage 'skunks' were counted as 2 games. (no double skunks for '98)

Bridge was counted by sessions, not hands.

TOTALS
183 games, played 648 times.
127 games new to me in 1998.

Got in more games than ever before last year. This was due not only to
attending my first gathering of Friends (plus Early Days), but also finding yet
another games group about halfway through the year - three groups and I still
don't play weekly!

I also kept track of who won games last year, and though I was pleasantly
surprised to discover that I won more games than I thought I had, I'm not
tracking this stat this year. I found that I actually cared more about winning
when I was keeping track of it, and that took some of the fun out of gaming for
me.

Here's a little year-end wrap-up:

FAVORITE NEW (TO ME) GAME OF 1998
For Sale - light, but ingenious. The king of the fillers. Always willing to
play juuust one more.

Runners-up:
Big Boss
Kohle, Kei$, & Knete - Sackson figures out how to make the negotiation game
work correctly
25 Words or Less
Showmanager
FAVORITES I WOULD PLAY MORE IF HAD THE RIGHT GROUP:
Airlines - how have I avoided this wonderful game for so long?
Mue - I could play this weekly
Euphrat & Tigris - half of my games last year were 2-player

GAME MOST LIKELY TO BE PLAYED LESS NEXT YEAR
Settlers of Catan - after playing 52 games between January and July 1st, the
53rd game wasn't played until August. Then a run of games through November,
then not a game from mid-November through the end of the year. So, in fact, I
played 67 games of Settlers in, like, 10-and-a-half months. Wouldn't be
surprised to see this stay under 10 next year. Still enjoy it, mind you, it's
just that we've acquired so many other games to play these days.

Runner-up:
Guillotine - it was fun while it lasted, now off with its head.

GAME I DON'T REMEMBER AT ALL
Caravansérail - I know I played it 'cause it's on my list. Can anyone help me
out here? What is this game?

DOPIEST SURPRISES
Lost Treasure - slightly clever game put over the top with it's battery
operated 'treasure locator/diving tank.' Silly fun, but not as silly as....
The McDonald's Game - played this at a friend's house with his kids. After the
kids went to bed, the grown-ups played it again. Amazingly simplistic,
wonderfully stupid fun. Plus there is an actual - albeit simple - game in
there.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
Rette Sich Wer Kann - forget the animosity of negotiation, by the time we got
to the end, it didn't feel like anything we did up to that point made much
difference. That is also looked wonderful and cost so much made this a big
let-down.

Runners-up:
Mississippi Queen - Oooooh, that endgame!
Ausbrecher AG - anyone got a fix? I want to like this one.
Shanghai - GREAT bits, bad Sackson game
Magnificent Race, The - wonderful roulette wheel game system buried in tedious
game

GAMES I'VE HAD FOR ALMOST ALL OF LAST YEAR (LONGER IN SOME CASES) BUT STILL
DIDN'T PLAY
Air Empire
Der Fliegende Hollander
Grass
Quo Vadis?
Vernissage

PLAN TO PLAY MORE OF NEXT YEAR
Airlines
Drunter & Druber
El Grande
Euphrat & Tigris - with 4 players
Modern Art
Mue!!
Titan: the Arena
25 Words or Less
