** Announcing the release of XBoard and WinBoard, version 3.4, patchlevel 1 **

XBoard is a graphical chessboard for the X Window System that can
serve as a user interface for GNU Chess, for the Internet Chess Server
(ICS), or for electronic mail correspondence chess. XBoard can also
be used by itself. It can read and write game files in PGN (portable
game notation).

You can (either now or soon) get XBoard 3.4.pl1 from the chess ftp
server, from GNU ftp sites, or from my Chess page on the World Wide Web:

- ftp://caissa.onenet.net/pub/chess/X/xboard-3.4.pl1.tar.gz
or ftp://caissa.onenet.net/pub/chess/uploads/X/xboard-3.4.pl1.tar.gz
- ftp://prep.ai.mit.edu/pub/gnu/xboard-3.4.pl1.tar.gz
- http://www.research.digital.com/SRC/personal/Tim_Mann/chess.html

If you plan to use XBoard with GNU Chess, get the current patch level
of GNU Chess 4.0 to go with it. It is available from prep.ai.mit.edu
and other GNU ftp sites, in the same directory as XBoard.

WinBoard is a port of XBoard to the Microsoft Win32 programming
interface. It runs on Windows NT and Windows 95. Most of its
functions do *not* work on Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11,
not even with the Win32s package; it works only as a standalone
chessboard and PGN viewer/editor on the latter systems. WinBoard
3.4.pl1 is available from the chess ftp server and from my Web page in
zip format. It is preferable to use a 32-bit unzip program that
understands long file names to unzip this file.

- ftp://caissa.onenet.net/pub/chess/Win3/winboard-3.4.pl1.zip
or ftp://caissa.onenet.net/pub/chess/uploads/Win3/winboard-3.4.pl1.zip

As yet there is no version 3.4 release of the related program AmyBoard
(for the Amiga), and I do not know if one is in preparation.

Report bugs in these programs to <bug-gn...@prep.ai.mit.edu>.

=== Change highlights since the last XBoard release (3.4) ===

* Preliminary support for Bob Hyatt's chess program Crafty. Currently
the only documentation for this is in the FAQ file, and a few things
don't work with Crafty 8.23. More development is planned.

* WinBoard updated to match XBoard. However, "-size tiny" and other
new size options are not implemented in WinBoard.

* Minor bug fixes and improvements; see ChangeLog in the distribution.

=== Change highlights since the last WinBoard release (3.3.pl3) ===

* Added support for bughouse as implemented on FICS.

* Added "-size tiny" and other size options.

* Added an option (getMoveList) for ICS mode to control whether xboard
fetches the move list when the board display switches to a new game.
Turning this off is useful if you are observing multiple blitz games.

* Removed use of .EX macro from man page. It is not supported by some
nroff -man macro packages, notably the one on Linux.

* Bug fix: Underpromotion to a knight was not working with ICC.

* Bug fix: Special pty code for host types *-*-aix3* and *-*-irix3* had
a bug that would cause childio.c to fail to compile on those hosts.

* Bug fix: In pgntags.c, memory was being freed while still in use. One
symptom this caused was that on some machines, cmail would fail with a
message that it could not find the BlackNA tag.

* Bug fix: If ICS rejected a move, it was correctly undone on the board,
but the message widget still displayed the bad move.
