What does 'freeroll tournament' mean?

Sorry for the dumb question but my ignorance is making it hard for me to
understand some threads. I googled it and found hits for poker strategy for
free rolls. Seemed it just means any tourney with a cash prize and free
entry. Is it as simple as that?

Almost. If you remove the word cash, then you're right.

Freerolls sometimes pay cash. Sometimes they pay entries into
other tournaments. Sometimes they pay other prizes.

Sometimes there's an entry "fee" that isn't cash, e.g. frequent
player points. I've seen those called freerolls, even though
that's not quite 100% accurate.
