my father, RIP

My father, Don F. Hanlen, died on July 31 this year. He was a veteran
of World War II, landed in North Africa, Sicily, Italy (twice) and
France. He was called back into military service during the Korean
conflict. He was a pioneer in the peaceful use of nuclear power, wrote
a physics text, participated in his community as long as he was able
(he gave up delivering meals-on-wheels just four months before his
death at 84) and was known as a good man by all who knew him. His
wife, my mother, was Judith C(ausey) Hanlen, a school teacher and
professional who also gave to the community before she died. (Her big
thing was teaching English on the side, for free.) Her brother, my
uncle, was a naval pilot (PBYs) who didn't come back from the
Pacific..

Why am I posting this on a backgammon newsgroup?

I'm posting this because some people in the backgammon community,
FIBS' users, have taken their hatred of me over the years to the
point where they've made up stories about my parents which sicken me,
and they continue to do so. At the head of this list is Bob Ebeller
(NIHILIST), who actually faked my ID years ago, and posted to
rec.games.backgammon a sick fantasy that I still can't figure out -
or at least figure out why. He created a fake account on another
server in my name to do so. After NIHI, the worst of the bunch was a
user who used various IDs on FIBS (DrMengele, Rabbi_Eichmann, and also
many variations on my name.) Major participants in the slander are
HoneyGirl, SunnyDays, and zyxtcba. These people think nothing of the
truth. They rabidly defend their sick little bubble on FIBS to the
point where they drive users away. Some of them are intelligent
people, some are dupes. Sometimes other ignorant people echo them,
like Mort, VegasVic, donzaemon, and most recently and sadly, socksey.

My parents taught me to speak the truth, and to speak it when people
try to take it away. I don't mind when people attack me or my words,
although I would prefer they do so in a civilized manner. I wish I
could say that I don't understand why attacks against my words
include my family, but there's a lot of sickness in the world. These
days, if you can't justify or win a debate with someone, hurt their
families. That seems to be some kind of justification. As a matter of
fact, I DO mind when ignorant jerks slander my family, so I guess I
lose that battle.

Anyway, considering that last year, after a several year hiatus, they
were willing to restart the worst of the slander on
rec.games.backgammon, and now, 3 months after my father died, I find
socksey thinks it amusing to joke with NIHILIST about my Dad, I think
it time that I point out what I think of these sad people.

In the words of Confucius, hatred corrodes the vessel in which it is
stored. I suppose if you sip from that vessel, you can expect problems
from one or the other end of your alimentary canal. I feel pity for
these people, but more for their ignorant dupes like socksey who find
them amusing to the point where they ignorantly join in hatred and lies
for a chuckle and a pat on the head in shouts from the "in" (re:
noisiest) crowd.

i'm the one who says, "You shout:" is that so bad? i think not. i
meant no disrespect to your deceased father, but my comment was
addressed to Niholympic and for his chagrin, not yours.

i certainly don't think my comment deserved no less than 11 "f**k
you's" in messages you left me.

You've been around FIBS long enough to know about the filth (criminal)
of users like NIHILIST and HoneyGirl on this matter.

I note you don't quote the entire PUBLIC conversation here in your
defense, just a bit of it.

I would freely admit that I may have overreacted in my PRIVATE response
to you, given your attempted spin on your words IF:
- You included the entire PUBLIC session;
- You did not forward my PRIVATE comments to the worst of FIBS;
- You did not Bowdlerize my comments on FIBSBoard.

I am saying that there's a spin you *might* make about what you said
that IS favorable to you, given your editorialization, but certainly
NONE based on the ENTIRE conversation OR your subsequent actions.

Don,

The portion of the shouts that I posted included my ONLY comment to the
conversation. I was playing at the time and did not participate
further. None of the section of quote was changed. I consider all of
my only words as my defense. The comments from others were not my
words, Don. None of them. Got it?

I've been in "conversations" with you before in public forum and in
private on various subjects.. I simply do not have the time for
argumentative rhetoric, as the big bad nasty Nihilist jokingly implied,
might last for more than 4 years.

What goes any of this crap have to do with backgammon ? After reading
this garbage I almost hope he died a long, slow painful death from
brain cancer. You seem to be an especially miserable human being. With
luck you'll be hit by an 18 wheeler and require tube-feeding for the
rest of your life.
