It doesn't look good. My feeling is that if there was any way possible he
could be posting, he would be, especially at the beginning of football
season. Death or some sort of catastrophic injury are the only things that
make sense.
The shitty thing is, we'll probably never know (shitty for me at least,
because I would like to know). Sure takes the soul out of this place,
that's for sure.
I fear the worst and it's a real downer how people just disappear like
that on the web. This takes a lot of the fun out of Football season
for me. No contest either, sigh, what a loss.
I disagree. There are other scenarios that would/could make sense.
Brian's been posting here for almost 12 years. Some things that could
make sense other than catastrophe . . .
Maybe:
1/ He just doesn't like it here anymore. Lots of people gave him
enormous amounts of shit constantly. Not that he doesn't deserve it
*sometimes* but people here, like Catron and Collard for example,
really enjoy exploiting what they see as his personality flaws. We all
know that he's easy to rile up. After years of soemthing like that I
can easily see why somebody would just say fuck it, I'm outta here.
The fact that there was no "I'm outta here" speech prior to leaving
would make sense if you know Brian.
2/ Running the football contest is extremely time consuming. Maybe
his work situtaion changed and is unable to do it anymore. Could have
been the only thing keeping him around here. I was active here this
summer until being eliminated from the Baseball contest. I kind of
don't really post here anymore. That was all that was here really
worth a shit. Over the summer he emailed me and expressed his desire
to possibly not run the football challenge anymore, he wanted me to
take it over if he decided not to do it - I declined.
3/ While it seems that his absence is shrouded in negativity, maybe
something GOOD happened for him in his life that made this place no
longer viable for him.

Sure does.

I had almost daily (weekly at the least) email communication with him
up until around June. My email now is not being replied to, not
bouncing back, just no reply. Not a good sign if you're rooting for
his good health.

I'm not at liberty to discuss in this open, public forum some of the
things he and I discussed privately. I'm 40+, he's 50+, we all have
our health issues, but nothing that he and I discussed is leading me
to believe that he died from illness or natural causes. Maybe that
stuff was minimized. Maybe the bastard did die. If so, I would be
SHOCKED, not to have received some kind of notice from him that his
time was up before it happened. If something horrible happened
suddenly, there was a person(s) locally where he lives that I also
would be shocked if they didn't contact me. So I am holding out that
Brian is alive and well, and just moving on with the next phase of his
life.
Also, if a person has a problem that they want to rectify, whatever
that problem may be, sometimes the best course of action in life is to
simply leave the past behind you and move on. He and I argued a lot
about the relevancy of RGS . . . it wouldn't surprise me in the least
if he just stopped posting here with no notice. But as I said, I'm
shocked that he would do so without so much as even a note to the
people here that he respected, like James, like Steve, like so many
others. Like me.
How does a non related party go about finding out if somebody died or
not?

If you know the name of the city where he lives(d) and his name you might
try the local paper. They usually have an obituary section or you could
call the local police. I would track it down if I knew that information.
If he just left, that's one thing. If he in fact is deceased I'd like to
leave him a final "RIP" for the archives.

The best way to "thank" a bartender is to not stiff them.
The best way to stiff a bartender is simply say "thanks."
I found this site, where I was able to locate my deceased brother.
Check in his city/county, whatever government agency deals with the
cemeteries. I just buried my father about a month ago and i know the
cemetery has records.
Good luck.

Hold onto the obituary, James, et al. I called the local police in his
city and they looked it up for me. They were able to identify him and
told me there was no record of his death so unless he died within the
last week they assume he is alive. I didn't ask them to, but I guess
its a procedure thing when they get a call like this, they said they
were sending a peace officer to the last known address they had for
him just to check and see if he's ok. That sounded a little strange
to me, maybe the guy just doesn't want to be bothered, but that's what
they said. I had to give the police my info, and the lady I spoke with
was kind enough to tell me that the officer that was assigned the
detail, would definitely call me if Brian was no longer with us.
But it looks like he's alive. That of course is a good thing, but his
absence still has me worried, I hope he's ok.

Curiouser and curiouser, but that seems to be a good sign. I'm glad you're
following this up. Of course, I kind of hate to bother the guy if he just
wants to be left alone since none of us need a good reason (or any reason at
all) to stop posting here, but still, I think the scope of his activity over
the years on this newsgroup deserves some recognition if something did
happen.
James et al,
Well, I agree with you 100%. I was kind of taken back when they told
me they were sending somebody out, but it was already too late as I
guess they have their procedures, I certainly didn't ask them to do
that, in fact I objected on the very grounds that you just mentioned,
maybe the guy just wants to be left alone, but she said that they had
to do it after receiving the call. So it was too late.
I weighed taking this action very heavily, because like you, I agree
that maybe he just wants to be left alone and why bother the guy, but
in my case, its not just that he's not posting here, the communication
in email and by phone just dead stopped. I'm kind of feeling that
maybe I did the wrong thing by calling the police, but Brian is not a
criminal (far from it, he's one of the most moral guys I ever met) so
hopefully it's no big deal to him if there's a knock on his door.
Brian,
If you're reading this, this was likely a mistake on my part and I
kind of wish I didn't do it now, and if it has or will cause you any
stress please accept my deepest appologies. But you've got me, and
apparently others, really worried about you.
I hope it makes you feel good to know that people care.
Also you should know that my wife was really worried too, and when I
told her about the discussion taking place here, and that there was no
word from you here or in email, she really asserted herself in trying
to convince me to find out.
I was on the fence as to what to do, and wasn't realy sure what to do,
and was leaning towards not doing anything, but to tell you the truth,
up until last night, I thought you were dead. Also, Brian, please know
that I have not reached out to or communicated with anybody here via
email or phone regarding your absense and will not.
Your friend here, and in RL,
HC
Good to see Brian is still alive, i really thought he was dead, he was
the very last person i expected to see stop posting at RGS, he was the
one who contributed the most here and he seemed so passionate about
sports betting..well it's good that everyone knows now that he didn't
die, i was very curious as the rest of you were.
And most probably thanks to the likes of you he's not here this
season.
You gonna pick up the slack, Sparky?
Maybe so. Sometimes if you cant take the heat you need to get out of
the kitchen but i dont think he isnt here because of anyone. I would
bet something happened in his life..decided to give up betting, maybe
a loved one died, got some terrible health related news, something
along those lines. I dont think Brian decided to leave RGS after all
these years because i made a joke about canadians or busted his balls
about something else.
I do have to agree with Mister Catron. The people who don't take heat here
also don't dish is out.
Don't cry for Mister Anthony about the shit he took. The rules of the
playground are don't dish it out if you can't take it.
Regardless, I wish Mr. Anthony well. He was an active participant, not a
victim of the vitriol, but he should rightfully be credited that his on
topic posts were some of the most insightful.
Godspeed to him.
You're right about that.

Neither do I.
Those are the rules. If Brian was here he'd be telling you that he
didn't dish it out unless it was first dished out to him. And he'd be
right.

That's nice of you to say, the part about his posts.
> Godspeed to him
That's also nice of you to say, but I think the demise of Brian has
been greatly exagerated. I see no evidence suggesting that something
bad has happened, he probably just got sick of this place and maybe
picked his spot to bail because he didnt want to run the football
challenge. I don't blame him. If he had asked me, and maybe he did,
that would have been my advice to him. Don't do it anymore. Lots of
work that football challenge, for what, 12 years? Steve knows what
I'm talking about. I'm sure you do too.
