It's the luck factor of golf. Because it was at the dramatic end of the
game, it made good press and fun viewing. But you and I know that a
'fortunate shot' stroke on the first hole of the first day, counts the
same as the last putt.
What sets these guys apart is they visualize the flight of the ball and
are able to ignore whatever is between their ball and the place it will
land. Whether it's a tree just off to the side, and lake to fly over, and
branches above or below. They seem oblivious to them. Then know the flight
and where it'll land. For me, the moment I know I have to hit over water,
I 'visualize' a splash.
So to enhance my enjoyment of the game, I designed a few new rules for
myself. If I happen to go in the rough, I consider it manmade, don't want
to damage my clubs, and give myself a free drop on the fairway. Putts of
less than two feet are a gimme. (The pros get to play on better greens
than I do). And then I usually don't keep score anyway. I'm out there to
BS and joke with my pals, enjoy the out of doors, hit something, then lie
about our scores over lunch after.
