In Hold 'em, what exactly is meant by "defending the blinds" and what, in
general principles, is the proper strategic way to approach doing so?

"Defending the Blinds" refers to calling a raise in the Big Blind (or a single
bet in the small blind). It is generally associated with protecting the money
you already have in the pot (your blind). There is no "automatic"
approach;although, in higher limit and tournement play most would agree that
you should place the same requirements on blind hands that you place on Early
Position hands. The nature of the particular game and exactly who did the
calling and raising should be carefully considered any time you are going to
put money in the pot.
