I was just watching Gunsmoke, and I'm sure I've seen this in other
places too, perhaps even in Rounders. The guy says, "I raise you $10,
I think you're bluffing". Well then why are you raising, you dumb
mutherfucker?

To tell you the truth, I really need to see that movie. I watched it
as a kid. Maybe I'll buy it on Amazon or something.

I looked back at Rounders earlier today and it wasn't quite what I was
thinking. In the initial bad beat when he loses the 30K at the
beginning of the movie, he shoves against Teddy and says something
like "I'm going to raise you all-in because I don't think you have the
spades." Not quite the same, but it was a stupid thing to say anyway.

I still remember the first thing I thought about Rounders. When Worm
was cheating, nobody ever cut the deck on him. Wtf?

I didn't even see the initial bad beat coming.

That's when I thought this might be an above average poker movie,
which I think it was.

Talking about opening your trap when you shouldn't, why exactly did he
tell KGB that he spotted his tell (the thing with Orios), because he
was in a fucking hurry? Didn't he say some shit like that? What the
fuck sense did that make?!

I remember that, barely. Didn't he lay down Aces and Fives or
something like that?

I don't recall exactly and that's not the point fuckf.. eh, Paul. Why
did he tell KGB (and be right) that he spotted his tell, huh? Isn't
knowing an opponent's tell a valuable piece of information you might

I knew what the fucking point was. I'm not a child. Do you think
you're talking to Clave or something? I was just sayin, that the hand
was Aces and Fives, I THINK. And Teddy had a wheel. I may be wrong,
but can't I just fucking say what I remember without you busting my

Teddy had the wheel alright, that much I remember, 2 and a 4 I think.
I'm not 100% sure if it was aces and fives or aces and tres.

Perhaps you could go research that for me. Or I'll put a bet on with
you now if you promise you don't know the answer.

I have the movie on my hard drive somewhere. I might check it later.
But I don't want to bet with you, because I'm pretty sure it was Aces
and Fives, and he laid it down because of what Teddy did with the
OREOS.

He's conveying weakness. He's saying that he's not raising based on the
strenth of his own hand.

That's one of the first tells I learned at Commerse playing $1-$2. On the
river an Asian guy declared, "I know you don't have nothin". Then he
raised me. You know what he had.

Of course you might want to try that as a reverse tell against some chump
like me.

I think it was the same when they were playing with the off-duty
cops. Worm runs up an overhand stack and then just starts dealing,
without offering the deck for a cut. Wtf?

Of course, I loved the movie, but there were some obvious things like
that that were just unrealistic. For instance, when his girlfriend
was about to drop him, and he said something to her like "I was in
that card game and for the first time in months I felt alive". And
she responds, "You're talking about feeling alive over a fucking card
game?", while shaking her head disapprovingly. Realistically, he
should have PUNCHED HER right there!

That's the obvious answer. Paul isn't differntiating between dialog
and a thought balloon. Obviously, if you _think_ the guy is bluffing,
so you won't get called if you're not beat, you just call and not
raise. But saying that the guy is bluffing is not the same as thinking
he is bluffing.

On the other hand, I doubt that the writers of a Gunsmoke episode gave
it any real thought.

There has absolutely NEVER been a poker scene in anay movie that has ANY
credibility whatsoever.

From Cinn Kidd to Big Hand to Rounders to that POS series on espn with
Madsen as the hero (where they show dealers putting the river to the left
of the flop on the end) .

an extra board dealer from the Monte carlo could improve the poker scenes
in ANY movie EVER

No, it was just a casual card game and two guys were passing time
while sitting in a private train car and they got put on a siding
because the butler had spotted fever and he died and then the guy who
raised the $10 also got sick with it and Doc had to burn the animal
skins they had from hunting in Wyoming because they had tics on them
and the towns people got wind of the train with the plague and Festus
had to keep them from rushing the train and they jumped Marshall
Dillion and knocked him out for awhile and Festus and Doc had to keep
the people from setting the car on fire and the guy who bet in the
first place and got raised $10 ended up trying to leave and he got
shot in the shoulder and took the other guy's wife as hostage and then
he got shot and killed and Marshall Dillion finally woke up and they
saved the other people on the car and Kitty went and got some blankets
or something.

Heh. I was going to ask if that was acceptable.

doggy has this thing. If you say "I won the hand with a boat twos full of
threes" his head will explode

I agree with doggie - the whole terminology, plus the word *boat* makes my
skin crawl.

What if you say, "Full boat, twos over threes"?

But who ever drew a hand like that? LOL.

It has become a BIG DEAL because of TP.

Where do you get the idea that Paul loses at poker? I seriously

Seems quite a realistic view of Army poker. Richard Nixon won a ton of money in the Navy, stationed on Guadalcanal.

Oh yea! Oh yea! Well ask your friend Beldin; I kicked his miserable ass and he won't even fold aces.

Holy shit! It's a good thing you bumped mo_ron's post. I don't read him and you've just shown why. And I cleaned out the boys at poker last night; along with a full bottle of wine and I'm 6 for 12 at turny cashing on line. I am UNBEATABLE.

Sort of off the subject, I can't remember the last time I heard any
player declare his hand, and I rarely hear dealers do it either. We
just turn our cards up, and that's it. Where does Doggie play when he
hears these things? Is it still 1950 where he lives?

Sometimes players at the Connecticut casinos say what they (think
they) have as they turn their cards over. Some of the dealers will say
what the winning hand is, but not often. If it is a case where a
kicker might or might not play, the dealer will usually say "ten
plays" as she pushes the pot or "chop" as he splits it.

Doggie absolutely _knows_ what was normal poker slang in one
particular place at one particular time and feels that this is the
correct way to speak anyplace and anytime.

As I recall, he paid his way through college with poker winnings.
One of our old students played poker with him, when he was in the Marine Honor
guard.

According to yet a different version that he told people, Nixon didn't
learn poker until after college. He was a serving officer in the Navy
and he would talk to an older officer about the game, deal out sample
hands and study the game very carefully. Only after he had studied the
game for months did he risk any of his money actually playing.

Eisenhower gave up poker when he realized that winning money from his
fellow officers (officers were forbidden to play with enlisted) might
hurt his relationships with them. So he started playing more bridge.
Which is weird because people, on the average, get much angrier with
bridge partners who fuck up than with poker players who win money from
them. But that's the story.

Moments after I read this post, I was dealt 32o in the BB. Just for
the heck of it, I called a min raise from the SB. Didn't draw a boat,
but I did flop a straight.

I think I made it clear that I have no knowledge of whether the Nixon
story is true. He and people who knew him told different stories to
different people. I think the Eisenhower story is very likely right.
He certainly played a lot of bridge, including a famous game on ship-
board on the evening before D-Day. But I only know the poker
information from his memoirs.
