Look for laughter.

As a novice poker player (mostly low limit) I'm curious about selecting
a table.  What kind of players do you look for before sitting down?
Assuming I haven't seen anyone play I avoid
1.  women, because IMHO the average LL woman is a stronger player than
the average LL man.
2.  slobs, because the casino is probably a second home to them.

but I prefer
3.  lotsa chips in front of the players, preferably in racks.
4.  drunks (duh)
5.  Asian tourists (I know this sounds REALLY racist but I've seen
several instances of someone going through +$500 at a 1-5 stud game
in a couple hours so please don't flame)

Are there certain things experienced players look for before they sit
down? Other than a spilled drink on their chair, I mean.

at 5-10 and up, maybe.

agree.

I prefer in messy stacks (see M Caro)

Many drunks at LL play well.  Be careful if you play in AC.  Look for
the QB1 hat!

Lots of talk of this, but I have never experienced it.

I don't play that often, but I'm good with faces.  If I see a game
where I know many of the players, I avoid it:  they are probably
regulars/semi-pros.

Best,

Peter

To paraphrase a poker cliche: if you can't figure out who the fish are at
the table then you're swimming upstream. Good luck on the river!

If you go into a casino and want to find the best stud game to
get into, but don't know anything at all about how to spot one,
if you are totally clueless, then pick the table where the
players are laughing.
