The real story may be as you have described, but we should at least be
skeptical that anyone would do that, assuming they had a more stable
structure to seek shelter.
One article I read said the man lived in the shed, and the tree fell
on him at 3 a.m., so I doubt he was the stupidest person on Earth. He
may have been living in a shed that was on the property of one of his
family members. We had warnings earlier (in Western TN) that evening
of a bad storm approaching, but perhaps he did not get that warning or
ignored it. If he heard the warning but decided to stay in the shed,
yeah, that's dumb, but not the dumbest decision ever, if he did in
fact sleep there every night.
