I have had to handle "clock" situations where one party is running their
mouth and appearing to get no back and forth from his opponent .
I have had them ask me "when are you going to start the count ?"
My pat response is "as soon as you stop talking and give the man a modicum
of respect"
I have also said "this is a big pot and lets give the man a bit of time "
i always make an effort to get the table quieted down and give the man
deciding some respect before I start the process.
You cannot waltz over to a table and blindly "start counting down" .. I
always asked the dealer if it had been a long time . Almost always they
nod that it has been a while . I nod and will sometimes walk away or turn
my back to give the player a bit of respect and a bit more time to go
ahead and act . i then return fairly quickly and try to make eye contact
with the player who is stalling. I will then say "I need you to go ahead
and act on your hand "
if I get no response or a ration of "back-talk" .. I simply override his
protest with , 'I am going to start the clock , you have 60 seconds and i
count to 10 .. if I get to 10 your hand is dead ".
I always used a cell phone and would give a count at 45 and 30 and at 10 I
would basically turn away or not look at the player and continue to count
to 10.. I do not make a point of talking to or at the player as I think it
appears more fair and professional to act like you are simply a function
of the game , rather than bearing down on him and heightening the drama of
the moment ..
i do everything possible to portray the position that I never want to
HAVE TO call a players hand dead ..
I have repeatedly had players (afterwards) come to me and say that this
manner of handling it , is extremely professional and thank me for not
handling the way so many other inexperienced floor people do it .
i will always always always ..NEVER start any process of putting the
clock on a guy who is being badgered or being ridden by anyone at the
table if he appears not to be talking back or making the situation worse ..
having said all that I believe that this floorman wanted to prove how
'sharp " he was in that he had the presence of mind to declare the hand
dead to show his 'absoluteness" in the process. he failed .
he jumped the gun and he was wrong .. the least thing you can do if you
are going to act like you are that "precise" is to know when you reach ZERO
No matter what your process is for killing a hand .. you ALWAYS try to
give the appearance of not "rushing" the process.
i did have one asshole who had the count put on him 3 times in one hour ..
I took him aside and told him the next time I had to do that , that it was
his last one . I informed that after that i would rush over and count to
10 and kill his hand as fast as possible ..
i had also determined that this was his way of fuckin with the game and
getting more 'attention "
anyone using the clock or the 'angle" of irritating someone with the clock
should never be tolerated
