OT: My favorite Canadian

favorite Canadian was and didn't want it buried in Doggy's thread.
Moe Norman, professional golfer
There are so many stories about Moe Norman that I wouldn't know where to
start. He developed a golf swing that is now called 'Natural Golf' You
stand with a wide stance and a unorthodox grip. He describes the swing
like using a hammer.
He played mostly on the Canadian tour and gave the PGA a try, but he was
clownish and dressed a little funny. A PGA official approached him to get
him to change his act and way of dressing and he went back to Canada and
never returned.
In the Canadian Championship he was in the lead on the last hole and hit
his pitching wedge on the Tee. He hit it about 110 yards and then took
out his driver and knocked the ball on the green and two putted for the
win. When asked about it he said "driver, pitching wedge or pitching
wedge, driver. What's the difference?"
Towards the end of his life Titleist payed him $5000 a month to recognize
his contribution to golf.
He is considered the most accurate striker of the golf ball ever.

WTF, Joni Mitchell is ninety-third? If you just look at the other
people in music on the list, so that you don't get into the relative
importance of music science or being a whore (Pam Anderson is on
there) they put her behind Shania fucking Twain and Sarah Mclachlan.
She should be up there right behind or right ahead of Neil Young.

It's impossible to argue "most important" when you are comparing
politicians to musicians to athletes to hockey players to Pamela
Andersons. However, AMONG musicians. who would rate Gordon LIghtfoot
ahead of Joni Mitchell. Anyone who agrees with that should turn in his
ears.

I love Joni Mitchell and I love Gordon Lightfoot too (and I like Neil
Young quite a bit). I would put JM and GL almost even near the top of
Canadian musicians (where is Robbie Robertson?) and NY a bit below them.
BTW, I love the Guess Who song "Lightfoot".

He's written some good songs and he does have a distintive voice but
Joni has written many more great songs and her musicianship is
incomparable. Still, Lightfoot being ahead of her didn't bother me as
much as Shania Twain. Gak.

The fact that Pamela Anderson could even be on the same list as some of
these people shows the absurdity of humankind. But, be that as it may, I
believe that music is such a varied art that I think I can understand any of
them being ranked higher than any other. Although, with that said, you sir
are a fucking idiot if you think Joni Mitchell should be ranked above Gordon
Lightfoot.

Moe was autistic.
I know a couple of the stories, and this is one of my own.
Most people just saw his exhibitions, I used to see him play when I was a
kid. He wouldn't waggle the club, he'd pull a club out the bag, walk up to
the ball and a split second later he would launch it like a bullet, straight
and long down the middle of the fairway with a continuous address-swing so
fast that you'd miss it if you blinked.
I've seen him hit 100 3-woods off the grass and they all ended up in an area
250 yards away no bigger than a living-room rug. And it didn't take long
either, he'd pull each ball out into position with the inverted toe of the
wood then wind up and smack it all in one continuous motion.
He often played for second or third place because that was the prize he
wanted.
As he walked on the tee in one tournament with a wood in his hand his caddy
for the day told him that there was a creek out there and he should use an
iron to lay up. He said, "I know, I'm going to hit it over the bridge". Sure
enough his ball landed just short of the creek, bounded across the
footbridge and into perfect position for the second shot.

You either have to be a big golf fan or have grown up in Ontario in the 50's
when Moe was dominating Canadian golf. I qualify on both counts.
