There are 80,000 legal immigrants from Haiti living in the USA,
probably a couple more that have extended their stay. Cable news
networks are happy to have 80,000 pair of eyes watching, let alone
80,000 new set of eyes.
Compare the plight of Haiti (pre-earthquake) with the plight of Cuba.
Not much of an advantage in being a democracy friendly with the US. So
yes, you are in the majority in not caring about the millions living
in abject poverty on an island within swimming distance from Fla.
Imagine the oupouring when Isreal becomes a victim of some disaster.
The Haiti response will seem like a dog and pony show compared to the
circus like response the US will show.
America will win more friends helping this poor country than all the
shock-n-awes we can afford. Yet, the price of the aid we give the
Hatians will pale in comparison with just a week of Middle East
shanannigans.
It takes alot of plows to make one modern sword.

I would tend to agree; but for the most part, it's not the people of the
various countries, but their leaders. Same like in our country. Bush &
Cheney fake up some intelligence and bomb and kill tens of thousands of
innocent old men, women and children in Iraq. The survivors are pissed at
our country. But it was our leaders, not me. That kid that was kidnapped and
spent 5-years in Brazil. Why didn't our governments act faster? Our
government backs the likes of Wal*Mart that deal in slave-labor products.
I'm sure some nine-year old is pissed he's working 12-hours a day because

You're right, although "friendly democracy" is a stretch � it's more like
a neglected colony, and its democratic elections have been a laughingstock
for decades. American and European corporations essentially destroyed
Haiti's agricultural sector in order to turn the country into a textile
sweatshop. Cuba is at least self-sustaining agriculturally because it
closed its markets to American corporations and made a commitment to
localized agriculture.
Cuba might be able to bounce back from a disaster on this scale. Haiti �
heavily reliant on imports for just about everything � will probably not
be so lucky, once the television cameras leave.
