I know a lot of people in Ohio and many of them are die hard poker players.
Unfortunately Ohio has no casinos and legal gambling is limited to the state
lottery and horse tracks. There have been a number of attempts to bring a
casino in to Ohio in the past but they always get voted down. Much of the
funding for this casino opposition comes from the casinos that are already
operating in the surrounding states like Michigan, Indiana and West
Virginia. Ohio customers represent a significant part of their business and
the last thing they want to see is Ohio open its own casino. I've also
heard that some of the anti-casino money has been contributed by big casinos
in Vegas and Atlantic City but don't know if that's true or not.

In any case there is a new casino proposal on the November ballot. Lyle
Berman has made a proposal to invest $600M to build a casino resort and 18
hole golf course in Ohio. He is promising 5,000 construction jobs, 5,000
permanent casino jobs that can't be out-sourced and estimates the casino
will generate at least $200M a year in state tax revenue. Rumor has it the
casino will also include a 24 table poker room.

There are various groups opposing the casino and they're all getting a ton
of money from the surrounding casinos. They've mounted a very aggressive
anti-casino advertising campaign and some of the stuff they're putting out
is really inaccurate and/or misleading. However, Ohio's economy is very
depressed and so many jobs are leaving the state that the casino proposal
might actually have a (very) slim chance of passing this time. If by some
miracle the casino bill does pass you'll hear cheers from all the gamblers
and poker players in Ohio and loud sobbing from the surrounding states.

Is the referendum limited to one casino? Ohio is big enough that there are
several distinct markets. Where is Berman planning his joint?

Not as bad as your Obama posts, I hope?

It's going to be in the corridor between Columbus and Dayton.

This proposal is for one casino but if it passes it will open the door for
others. Ohio could easily support three or four casinos - Columbus,
Cleveland, Cincinnatti and possibly Dayton. The casino/resort Berman is
planning to build would be in Wilmington which is roughly a mid-point
between Columbus, Cincinnatti and Dayton. With those three markets so close
by, my guess is the place would be a gold mine. Given a choice, most people
would rather go to a delux resort with great shopping and amusements close
by that be stuck on some cramped river boat in the middle of no where.

As a Wolverine from that "state up north", I live by three words when it
comes to buckeyes...."Lower Your Expectations". They'll screw this up,
guaranteed.

Well bucko, I have just one word for you Wolverines - Toledo! I thought
Michigan had hit absolute rock bottom when they lost to Applachia State.
Seriously, how could their football program possibly fall any lower than
that? Answer - when they got their asses kicked by Toledo! Poor Bo must be
spinning in his grave. You guys wanted that ass wipe Rodriguez and we're
all damned happy you got him!

I would not mind a casino in Ohio at all. I travel to all parts of Ohio
and in fact was down in Canton all day yesterday in an old building
looking through old ass dusty documents.

When I travel there and have to stay it sucks because there is really
nothing to do down there. If they open a casino with a poker room I will
be very happy.

TIGERS World Series- 35, 45, 68, 84
RED WINGS Stanley Cups- 36, 37, 43, 50, 52, 54, 55, 97, 98, 02, 08
PISTONS Championships- 44, 45, 89, 90, 05

And what on God's green earth does that have to do with buckeyes screwing
up a casino deal?

Just go to Mountaineer in WVa, about 90 mins from Canton. It's got a
nice poker room, full of loose players.
