For a good poker player, Howard seem clueless about cell phones. I was
having coffee next to him at Starbucks a few months ago. He had trouble
turning his cell phone on. Then he shook it, like that would make the
battery charge up. When he gave up I offered him mine and he just shook his
head and went back to his coffee.

Jerry, I am being serious. How can you pay such prices for coffee. I am
really confused about the allure.
no allure for me.
A couple years we were on a roadtrip and stopped for coffee at a coffee
house. I told the kid behind the counter I just wanted regular old coffee.
he looked at me strange. I then said "You know, like at Howard Johnsons".
He looked at me even stranger.
When you want a cup of coffee, and you aren't at home or work, where would
you go? Lots of starbucks have drive thrus too, and I'm super lazy, so
I'll pay extra for that (btw, I only ever get the venti drip, which is
$1.80...not that much different than your average dunkin donuts).

Susan, how much do you pay now for a big cup (20 oz) of "regular old
coffee"? The big one at Starbucks is 1.80. The big coffee at the mom &
pop donut shop near my house is $1.50 (and the Starbucks tastes better).

My question would be how he can pay such prices for BAD coffee.
Starbucks is like the McDonalds of coffee in terms of quality,
but at a premium price. It's the worst of both worlds.

Starbucks drip has a burnt-bitter aftertaste, don't like. McDonald's
coffee is pretty darn good. Not kidding. Though you weren't implying
a comparison of their actual coffee, because McDonald's serves up a
(much) better brew than Starbucks, your analogy would've been better
served with something else. 'Starbucks is the Irish Mike of coffee.'
It's been my experience at all sorts of specialty coffee houses all over
the country that if you order a cup of coffee you get a cup of coffee. I
was at a Starbucks in Corpus Christi just yesterday and got an espresso
($2) for myself and a coffee ($1.50) for my mother. It was a fairly easy
transaction.
Why do y'all have so much trouble with simple retail transactions?

Viente, non-fat, no-foam, extra-hot, camel latte. My newspapers and friends
and a place in the sun. It don't get much better than that.

If that is where your friends hang out and it is nice and sunny (and free
WiFi?) ... makes sense.
Starbucks in Las Vegas won't even provide a free cup of water (at least
the one on the second level of Excalibur won't, even if you're paying for
a double espresso).
But the donut shop around the corner does have free wifi.

In Arizona it is illegal to refuse to give someone a FREE cup of water if
they ask for it.
You are not required to buy anything just ask for the water.

Sensible law really. I can see abuse of it, and abuse without that.
