ok due to the fact that recgroups is working poorly lately, I'm
attempting to switch to a "real" newsreader. Since I use a Mac,
Entourage (OE for Mac) is unacceptable (threading capability sucks).

On a Mac too, let us know how it works (use google groups now, no
filtering capability).

Thx.

I'm using MT-NewsWatcher (just go to versiontracker.com and download the
latest version...this app has been around for years but it has been
updated to be Intel native and works fine on Leopard). The threading
capabilities are good, and the kill file is nice. There are LOTS more
posts than I could see on recgroups...weird. Seems that a lot of the
spam is already filtered by default, which is also nice. The only thing
I don't like so far is that it looks like I have to close the news list
window and reopen it to update. Other than that, it seems to work well.
The big test will be if it works in the office too (since they have most
ports closed). I may have to set up a proxy port on my home server,
we'll see.

Hey, many thanks. 3 laptops. 2 Windows, one issued by/used for work
-- the other, for home, pretty much collects dust unless I'm playing a
poker site that doesn't support Mac (never bothered with boot camp).
And the Macbook Pro. Not a fanboy, but I live off of that sucka and
have grown weary of google groups.

Will pay a little visit to version tracker this afternoon.

Gratzi....

Forget bootcamp, get VMWare fusion, run your PC app no problem (or try
Crossover).

Another newsreader that is cross platform is Thunderbird.

It works reasonably well, but it is not specialized in USENET file
downloading.

But I haven't used the .binaries in ages.

Which newsreader app are you testing? I am also looking for a newreader
for my Mac and Entourage was horrible.

I'm using MT-Newsreader, but I don't like it. I'm going to look for a
better one, or write my own.

I use Thunderbird for both my personal email and newsgroups. It works fine.

Joe Long, my dear, dear friend, there was this time, oh, 10/5/2008 12:28
AM, or thereabouts, when you let the following craziness loose on Usenet:

Given that it's open-source, it would make a lot more sense for brew to
start here and customize rather than writing one from scratch.

Cheers.
