OT: TECHNICAL QUESTION

My old reliable Outlook Express has died on me, reason unknown. It was so
simple and easy to use. I had to replace it with Windows Live Mail, which
seems to work fine and has a nice layout. I have one issue with it.

When I look at my newsgroup feed, it expands the thread-trees which I like,
but no matter how many times I exit and reload, the old read messages are
still there. I want to make it so the read messages do not appear when I
open it, only the non-read (new) messages. There must be a simple setting
to do this, but I can't find it. Anyone know how to do this?

When you're looking at the message threads, from the "View" menu, select
"Sort or hide", then "Hide read messages".

If you are in the mood to experiment a bit, I recommend Seamonkey, based
on Mozilla (Firefox). It has an almost identical layout to OE or WLM but
it is much quicker and more responsive. It is comprised of a Browser and
Editor all-in-one, so you just have to go into
Edit/Preferences/Appearance and have it go directly to the
Mail&Newsgroups app when it opens.

There is no "View" menu. Where is this "View" menu supposed to be? There
are a row of buttons at the top, but none of them say "View" and I can't see

Oh damn -- you poor sod. You got the latest Windows Live Mail v2011 with
that damnable ribbon bar. I recommend uninstalling that mess and looking
for the Windows Live Mail v2009 download.

I've been accidentally "upgraded" to 2011 and I hate it so badly that I keep
a copy of the 2009 installation kit in an archive here to undo the "upgrade"
if it happens again.

If you uninstall 2011 and re-install 2009, your settings should be
preserved, at least.

In any case, in 2011 the view options are still there, but they're hidden
somewhere behind all that new stuff.

Nobody knows anything anymore, you don't need to when you have Google at
your fingertips. My wife asked me last night why every time she types
(s) it turns into a crescent moon icon (try it) and how to stop it,
Google is the answer.

The obvious answer is that they didn't want to, hence the horrible, clumsy
rip from OE.

I only use WLM because I was used to OE, and it does everything I need it
to.

But I swear, there's a special place in hell reserved for whoever
greenlighted the 2011 ribbon bar, because it's in all the Office 2012 apps
now.

I suspect that there is such a bloat of existing code that programmers
have to resort to putting options not where it makes sense, but where
it can find a home that doesn't break existing code.
