The parking lots at Hollywood Park are dangerous. Use the valet parking
facility if you are going there to play.

During the National Poker Championships I was stuck up at gunpoint and had
$2,500 stolen. There was a security guard 50 yards away, but she had
abandoned her vehicle and her duties to tend to some personal business with
her own automobile. The thieves escaped through the East Entrance to the
Century Blvd. Parking lot, which both the Director of Security and the
General Manager of Hollywood Park admitted to me should be locked at night
since it is not well lighted and does not have security cameras as does the
main West Entrance. A week later the East Entrance was still open at night.
It is now closed.

Hollywood Park has refused to reimburse me because they contend, after
consulting with a lawyer, that they were not negligent.

A few nights ago during the Seniors' tournament "Super" Mario Esquerra was
stuck up at knifepoint in the parking lot at Hollywood Park. He was cut and
required eight stitches to close the wound in his chest. However, being
"Super" he did fend off his attackers.

You didn't have a case against them because you're damages where to small.

But, Mario got hurt. If there has been a pattern of crime in the lot and
they can't show that they've taken specific efforts to increase security as
a result, then Mario has a strong case. He got hurt, he can get larger
damages than just monetary losses.

It would be nice thing for all poker players for Mario to check it out with
a lawyer. Them getting hit with a heavy judgement (and they would probably
lose) might jolt them into doing something to provide protection.

These failure to protect suits are well established in hotels and
apartments. Wal-Mart recently lost a big one becuase of inadequate parking
lot security.

On of y'all should try to talk Mario into taking some action.

Sue HP and the on-duty guards, jointly and severally. A jury will
(most likely) find in your favor. They will probably settle out of
court to avoid publicity.

Next time you play there, ask to be escorted to your car by a security
guard.

I was at Hollywood Park a month or so ago and there was 2 security guards on
foot roaming the parking lot everytime I came in or left. And there was one
that was driving around in a white jeep cherokee.

I really don't like to mix politics with poker. I love to play poker and be
"free" to play the game of poker. BUT, if these criminals had had any idea
that his or her victim was carry a concealed weapon, the criminal may have
been more apprehensive about attempting the robbery. I will not go to the
"People's Republic of California" and play any more because:
1) I went there in Sept 98. Carried little cash, thought I would just go to
the same banking firm I use in Las Vegas (Bank of America) and get some
money once I got there. Took a cab to the bank, went inside, there was
virtually no furniture, one security guard and maybe two clerks working
behind 4 inch bullet proof plexiglass, which ran the length of the bank.
It was a war zone.
2) I a law Abiding citizen that have a carry concealed weapons permit in the
State of Nevada, cannot carry my side arm for self protection in California.
3) No gun law is going to stop the criminals from having guns. There are
Billions of guns on planet Earth and Thousands more being made everyday
OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES. The only person that was stopped from carrying
a firearm in California under California's strict gun control laws, was me,
the Law-Abiding citizen. In Nevada we can legally carry a concealed weapon,
once we take the proper training course and have a thorough back ground
check completed. It is nice having the added security of self protection
available and, I believe since this is law in Nevada, there are few, if any,
robberies in parking lots.

The recent rash of Casino robberies in Vegas, like the one attempted at
Harrahs a month ago, I believe would not have happened if the Security
Guards had been armed. The tourist the criminal shot in the back and
KILLED, would probably be alive and the criminal locked up, if the Security
Guards had put the suspect under apprehension with guns pointed at him. But
no, they tried to use muscle instead, result, ONE DEAD TOURIST AND ONE
SECURITY GUARD SHOT. Some may contend that bystanders in a crowded casino
would be in harms way if a shoot out occurred. Well folks the Metro police
ride bikes up and down the crowded sidewalks and they are armed. So I don't
think being armed inside or outside in a crowded environment changes things
enough for this argument to be valid.

Law Abiding Citizens should have the right and do have the right, to defend
himself or herself at all times, at least in Nevada, with a firearm in the
home or on his or her person.

And on this forum, dedicated to poker, that is all I care to say on the
subject of having the right to defend one's life and POKER MONEY!

May the flop be with you

haven't y'all got it through your thick numb skulls use the valet or carry a
concealed weapon and to be always aware of your surroundings and person or
persons entering you comfort zone. Use the surrounding vehicles to make space
around you and ANY person entering your comfort zone. If you are carrying any
appreciable amount of money get a escort or leave with a group of people. Or
best of all come to Las Vegas to play poker instead and stick around inside the
casino until you can get a security escort out of the building. The security at
HP is Laughable and I wouldn't come or go from there with out a group or my

No one in RGP should be getting robbed at HP after the lessons I've
given out here. Let me repeat the steps involved in not getting robbed:

1. Pack .22 w/light load.
2. Insert gun into face of anyone approaching you oddly.(everyone in LA
knows not to act suspicious...if they do, they are for a reason)
3. Shoot if you see metal or scum keeps approaching.
4. Repeat step 3 as necessary(If possible shoot only once...no one will
even notice one shot in LA).
5. Leave casino immediately.

If you get robbed in LA, it really is your own fault...
What are you worried about...an LAPD trying to arrest you for taking
out the trash? You do know they'll run the prints on the corpse and
probably find a rap sheet 8 feet long and write it off as a drug deal
gone wrong...Just make sure you leave the scene...not because you'll
get into trouble...but because it's a big headache. If you are worried
about getting busted for a concealed weapon, just go get an address in
Northern California in one of the counties up there that offer
concealed weapons permits. You just need 3 references and any lame
excuse for needing one(i.e. carries alot of cash for business).

I don't know how a lawsuit would turn out, and I'm not an expert on
California law, despite having handled a few commercial cases there.
But I do think the Casino has a great deal of legal exposure, if they
volunteer to provide security, and then don't provide security that
successfully secures your property or person. I'm sure a lawyer would
take the case, and based on the limited facts given here, I'd tell the
Casino, if they were my client, that they had serious exposure.

You could probably sue in small claims court pretty cheaply.

This is why you should always park in the valet, then the only thing
that you need to worry about is getting followed home or to your room.

I went to LA for a week in the early early 90's, took 20k with me. My
plan was to drive over there and play and put the money in my players
bank. After driving into headlights for 5 hours I decided that I
wouldn't even go to the casino, I would get a room and get some sleep
first. After getting a room which had a refrigerator in it I decided
that I would go to the 7-11 on Washington and get some sodas. I left
the 20k in my room and took my odd money with me, which amounted to
$76. I got robbed at gunpoint outside the 7-11! This was a random LA
incident that had nothing to do with poker. LA is a dangerous place.

As for security guards carrying guns; One of the downtown casinos is
being sued because; some broke ran out of the building not paying his
breakfast check which amounted to $8. After chasing him for two blocks
and not being able to catch him, one of the security guards shot him
in the back. Wouldn't want the guy to get away without paying.

Chuck, if I were you'd I'd get together with Mario and find some
starving young lawyer willing to look into this on a contingency basis.
I don't much like people who file lawsuits just to make money, but I do
think you're entitled to get your money back and Mario is entitled to
some pain-and-suffering damages, and of course there is the altruistic
angle that even just the threat of expensive legal action could get HP
to address its security problems. So you would be helping your fellow

I lived in Texas for over 20 years. When they changed the laws to allow
carrying concealed weapons there were debates on all sides of the issue.
The fact is that it made very little difference in everyday life in Texas.
The bad guys had guns before the law and they have guns after the law. In
many cases, good guys were able to protect themselves and save their
families after the law. That's what I find so strange in good people's
attempts to outlaw guns......they forget that the bad guys are not going to
follow their new law. Only the good guys will.

And by the way, I have never owned a gun and rarely saw a handgun (maybe two
or three times in 20 years) when I lived in Texas.

CCW wiped it out? Congratulations.

I posted a couple weeks ago about Mario's other stabbing a few months ago.
This is a different incident. In the first one he was attacked by two
knife-wielding guys, Mario was stabbed but he broke one guy's arm and they
got no cash or anything from him.

This time Mario was attacked by two guys (one knife). He was stabbed in the
chest. Two moments later, the attackers were fleeing after one took a hard
kick to the groin and Mario started after the other. As he fled, one
attacker was shouting "El Diablo" (the Devil) about Mario.

"Super" Mario Esquerra is a 71-year old great-grandfather.

And the Hollywood Park parking lot is the most disgusting, customer-hating
thing you can possibly imagine. Shame on Hollywood Park.

Well, I guess we'd better take the "phallus symbols" away
from all the police too, since people have been hit by stray
police bullets. Sure, they won't be able to protect you
anymore, but that's a small price to pay to ensure that you

Incidentally, in Nevada at least, CCW permit holders are
required to take a training course, where you learn that

Linda you moron,

First off...this is Los Angeles. A Concealed weapon charge is a joke
here. Felony charge like that gets immediately dropped down to a
misdemeanor. If they don't drop charges all together, they'll let you
go with community service and clean your record altogether if you stay
good for the next two years. You can get convicted for this every two
years for the rest of your life and die with a clean record.

Beats the hell out of someone from the ghetto robbing or killing you in
a casino parking lot.

Besides...anyone who wants a concealed weapons permit can get one in
california if you have any brains.

Just what I need, another person who has no idea what she is talking
about be so very prepared to throw away my constitutional rights.

Accidental deaths from firearms run about 200 annually, with the victim
overwhelmingly being the person handling the gun[1]. Annual deaths
from lightning strikes run about 90, well more than the number of
*innocent bystanders* killed by accidental firearm discharges.

Justified uses of firearms for self defense are counted in the
millions, annually.

And ONCE AGAIN you miss the vastly greater risks posed by a drunk in a
parking lot - assualt and drunken driving, just to name two.

I hope you didn't kick anyone when your knee jerked. I hope someday
you meet an idiot who wants to throw away some right that *you* value.

Hunting out of the back of a pickup might be illegal in Texas. But, you can
fish out of the back of a truck.

Padre Island is 180 miles long and is only inhabited on the two ends. The
sand dunes have a few coyotes hanging around.

I used to live in Port Aransas, on the North end of the island.

I knew a couple of cowboy fishermen who used to back their pickup up to the
dunes (a few miles down the island) and cast deep-sea fishing rigs into the
dunes, with pieces of meat attached to some big hooks.

I love it.

I've got an idiot of a friend named Spaulding. Once while trout
fishing he gobbed a big ball of velveeta cheese on a treble hook. His
inept, spastic attempt at a cast sent the bait off course, onto the
ground near some geese. One of the birds immediately scarfed down the
cheeseball. Panicked by the tension on the line, it tried to fly
away. Not wanting to leave a hundred yards of Trilene attached to the
goose (which would surely get it killed), Spaulding reeled it in before
cutting the line. It was one of those sights a person never forgets.

Depends on the county.

Alameda County, for example, has something like 3 concealed carry permits
issued to people other than cops.

The Sherriff just doesn't issue them. Same with Sherriff Hennessey in San
Francisco County, I believe.

I would imagine it's easier in places like Kern County.

No, shame on everyone who continues to risk life and limb to patronize
them. You have the ultimate vote in a free country- your feet.

But that may not be as exciting or profitable as getting assaulted and
bringing a legal suit against the owners. It would still probably be
more effective than whining about it here. And it might require taking
some personal responsibilty for your own safety rather than blaming the
evil corporate interests.

Its not like you live in a indian-gaming only state like CT where you
are "forced" to play poker there.

LOL. That's pretty funny, Steve.

The first time I ever played pot limit Omaha/8 was in a little private
cardroom in Ingleside Texas. I lived in Victoria at the time, and went down
to the game with a couple of guys I knew from Port Lavaca. I only knew them
from a poker game in Victoria and didn't know them very well (I'm not sure
what they did for a living, I think maybe car theives). So, I didn't really
know anybody there.

It was a pretty loose game, lots of action. In the middle of one hand, this
buzzing noise went off. There was a big pot, lots of action this hand.
But, when the noise went off, everybody puts there hands down and gets up.
The room had a lot of furniture in it, poker tables, dominoe tables, a lunch
counter, etc. No one was there except the players in our game.

One guy goes over to the lunch counter and gets a rifle from under the
counter. Another guy goes over to a stuffed chair and gets a pistol from
under the cushion. The owner of the room goes to a closet and gets a
shotgun. In very quick order everyone in the room has a gun except me.
They take positions at windows and doors and the owner goes out the backdoor
with his shotgun.

I'm sitting at the table, alone with the pot and the cards while all this is
going on. I'm thinking it would have been nice to have stayed home.

Then the owner comes back in and says, "squirrel must have set it off".

They all put the guns away and come back to the table, and we resume the
play of the hand.

That's a terrible, and fortunately very rare thing that happened
to your neighbor. I'll never forget my brother's best
friend in grade school. He and his mother died during a home
invasion (his father survived his gunshot wounds). This is a more
common occurence, as is the incidence of violent crimes being
thwarted by homeowners with guns. I would love to live in a world
where I thought the safer course would be to not own a gun, but
I love my children too much to ignore the truth.

Ladders, Pools and electrical outlets each kill more children in
homes than guns.

Read it for comprehension this time. It says 34,000.
The 34,000 are firearm related fatalaties. Reeper's
numbers are exactly the same as you would see if you
looked into actuarial tables. So subtracting out the
200 from the 34,000 firearm fatalities you receive
~ 33,800 people killed by guns. This is a lump sum
of course, counting both murders and incidents of self-
defense.

This is an issue that means a lot to me, and one on
which I've done a lot of study. I'd suggest some reading
if you really want to know the truth. Hint: insurance
companies are the best source of truth when it comes
to finding out exactly how people die...they are not
partisan they are watching the bottom line.

Get real.

I've been around guns all my life, pretty much as far back as I can
remember. I don't even own a gun right now, although we've got guns in the
house that my girlfriend owns.

The guns were never locked up when I was a kid. There was no reason to keep
them away from me. I had a use for one I'd just take it. I'll tell my dad
I was taking it, but it wasn't a big deal. For example, when I was 15-16 I
took VA and had to make trips out to the school owned farm to take care of
my project (pigs). There where some rattlesnakes around the farm, one of
the kids got bit once, so I kept a shotgun in the trunk of the car and would
often take my dad's .45 pistol with me to the school farm. Of course, in
today's climate of fear and blame he'd be prosecuted for letting me carry a
gun onto school property.

This idea that you've got to keep guns away from kids is just bullshit. I
went dove hunting with my dad when I was 6, fired pistols at military firing
ranges when I was 8, went deer hunting with my granddad when I was 10. I
never ran amuck with them, never played with them, never had a problem with
them. And, I didn't grow up to be a gun nut. I don't hunt and the only gun
I own is a 12 guage double barrelled that had belonged to great-grandfather.
It hasn't been operable in years.

But, I'm not afraid of guns. This fear of guns people have is just an
irrational fear. There's gotta be some medication for that.

One question:

I know little if anything about guns.

I live in a city where most all violent crime is perpetrated by either
drugged-up bums I could kick the shit out of with one hand, or gang
types who aren't interested in me because I have no associations
whatsoever to organized crime.

Let's say I decided for whatever reason to move to LA. Many (most?)
people on this group advocate the carrying of a concealed weapon to
protect myself. Not being a gun person, I don't challenge their
claim. But wouldn't it be more effective to carry a holstered gun?
This is, I presume, legal, and it's a pretty big deterrent to any
would-be assailants. Couldn't you just check it at the door, and pick
it up on your way out, and have it hang prominently from your side?

I'm curious as to why the proponents of carrying a concealed weapon
for one's safety usually insist that the weapon be concealed. Thanks.

Yup. Somehow "accidental" morphed into "injury". Still doesn't explain the
200 number tho. And of course fatalities is not a very good measure, since
accidents are far more likely to injure than kill -- as opposed to
deliberate actions.

If they define firearm related incidents in the same way the government
defines drug related incident then a state execution of anyone who's ever
held a gun would qualify as a firearm related fatality.

Maybe it's just me, but anytime I read "firearm related fatality" instead of
"people killed by guns" I start to wonder what the hell they're talking
about. Usually you'll find that the word "related" has been given some
special meaning.

Thank GOD?
The right to bear arms COMES from God.
Man is endowed by his CREATOR with certain unalienable rights.
The right to bear arms was there before the government existed, before the
Constitution was written, and before the 2nd amendment was added.

The 2nd amendment does not GRANT you the right to bear arms. The right was
ALREADY THERE.

Government's proper function is not to GRANT us rights, but to protect those
rights given to man by God before the government even existed. This
concept is unique. It separates us from the rest of the world. It made us
the greatest nation the world has ever seen, with the most liberty and
prosperity.

lol. The Founders had exactly what hot line they could dial to find out what
those rights were? Things change. Get over it.

No one has raised the entirely legitimate question of exactly how to interpret
the amendment. Does it really grant the right to bear arms to individual
citizens? "A well ordered militia" is how it starts- tell ya what- let's grant
that we have the right to own a front loading musket if and only if we belong
to a citizens militia.

That work for you? Call god up and tell me what she says.

The old time road gamblers used to use a tactic similar to this called a

$20. If drawn down on they would pull this out, toss it at the perps, and run

Dear Smart Guy,

You interpret what the amendment meant by reading what the writers said it
meant. They spelled things out quite clearly in The Federalist Papers. If
you went to public school you may not be familiar with these essays.

And in the Preamble, the Founders declare right from the beginning that our
basic rights, amongst them being life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness, come from our Creator and they are unalienable and self evident.
In other words our rights existed BEFORE government was created and self
evident means that they are so OBVIOUS that they don't even need explaining.

Now that's what they said, smart guy. If that don't sound good to you
perhaps you'd like to live in Havana.

And these ideas DON'T change. The Constitution is not "outdated".
Technology changes, yes, but political principles are ETERNAL. These
principles are exactly the same now as they were in ancient Rome.

And the main purpose of the 2nd amendment is to protect us from
dictatorship. If 6 million Jews were well armed, it would have been
considerably more difficult for Hitler to march them off to the death camps.
And the same for 700,000 Rwandans, 60 million Chinese, 3 million Cambodians,
and on and on and on.

And THAT, fool, is fucking self-evident.

I raised. Call, pass, or raise me back. Or put your name on the board for
a smaller limit.

Dear Ashley,

Our founders recognized that if rights come from government, then the
government can take away those rights too. So they declared that our rights
CANNOT be taken away. We ALWAYS have these rights. A legitimate government
protects our God-given rights. A government that takes away these rights is
thus illegitimate. Most people who have lived on this planet have lived
under oppression by an illegitimate government.

Ashley, I think our right to defend ourselves is one of those self-evident
rights. So obvious that it doesn't even need to be explained.

Have we all seen that 30-minute infomercial by the NRA where they interview
people from Australia, South Africa, Britain, and even Canada? You know the
one, where they are all talking about their government's confiscation of
firearms. It's really happening, y'know.

And the biggest proponent of gun confiscation is the United Nations.
They've got sinister plans for us. It's a trap.

The 2nd amendment was not meant to protect hunter's rights to shoot quail.
It was just another safeguard, or the final safeguard (if you will), to
prevent dictatorship. If they take away our rights under the 2nd amendment,
the rights enumerated in the rest of the amendments will fall like dominoes.

Best Regards,
-Paul

Injury was your word, specifically you said something about
"injury related fatalities". Not sure what this means, I figured
you merely mispoke. We were speaking of accidental deaths with
firearms earlier, your link measured all deaths due to firearms,
again I figure you just didn't read it closely.

Yes, you've yet to explain why the number is so small, given
your (implied) assertion that citizens having guns is so dangerous.

And of course fatalities is not a very good measure,
since

Seems like a reasonable guess, don't know if you are right or not
here. Bottom line: incidents of violent crime have gone down in
states where concealed carry laws have been passed. An obvious
conclusion, and one that has been measured in studies that seek
to filter out any other cause (economic changes, tougher sentencing
on violent crimes, etc) of these decreases in incidence of violent
crimes, is that the concealed carry laws result in this reduction
of violent crime.

Gennar's reply citing The Federalist Papers regarding rights coming from God
and NOT from the gov't was on the money. Too many readers of this rgp have
attended public schools and have been weaned on the premise that gov't is
the solution (the more, the better) and not the better. They skipped over
history to shade the fact that gov't started "helping" health care in '54
with Hill-Burton Act and then went on to form the depts' of Education and
Energy etc. Notice how much better things have become ?

Well, my copy of the Bible says 'Thou shalt not kill.' Actually it says

Or were you referring to some other "God"?

This is 100% false. The main purpose of the Second Amendment was
to alleviate concerns of states that the federal government would
not be responsive to Indian attacks on the frontier. The Virginia
delegation proposed an amendment reserving a right of rebellion
against the government, and it failed overwhelmingly, yet some
insist on reading the Second Amendment to incorporate this failed
amendment.

Before I get raked over the coals, let me note:

1) gun control is bad policy
2) CCW is good policy
3) not all bad policies are unconstitutional
4) there was a very good reason that talk.politics.guns was
established.

Followups set.

If it's not in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights, it has no legal
basis. The Federalist papers express the views of mortal humans who had
no more inside access to God than you do. Quoting someone else who
happens to agree with you doesn't mean you're both right.

The "founding fathers" were not always in agreement on things, either,
and not all agreed with the sentiments expressed in the Federalist
Papers. The Constitution and Bill of Rights were compromises, and they
weren't even the first stab at a government. The original Articles of
Confederation had no Bill of Rights at all.

Funny, but hardly anyone in those countries is complaining, except of
course the gun nuts. I've seen the NRA infomercial. It's a bag of lies
and distortions, at least about gun laws in the UK. Gun ownership is
still legal in the UK - with a license. The confiscation program applied
mainly to large-caliber hand guns and automatic weapons.

I've been to Britain. It's not a police state. Most of the cops still
don't carry guns there except on special duties. Britons have pretty
much the same freedoms there that we do here, believe it or not.

Linda,

I've never once said whether I'm a Catholic, a Jew, a Moslem, or even an
atheist.

What I said was that the men who wrote our Constitution said "Man was
endowed by his Creator" with our basic civil rights. (even the civil rights
of atheists)

That's what they said.

And Linda, you mention that the Bible says "Thou shalt not kill." You and I
know that means "Thou shalt not MURDER" as per section 187 of the California
Penal Code.

If some monster is about to harm my loved ones, and I splatter his brains on
the wall with a 45 caliber, well..., if there is a God, well....it's gotta
be alright with Him. I think "Thou shalt not kill" needs a qualifier.
It's like Omaha.

Speaking of Omaha, y'know, THAT'S all they play in hell. And low NEVER gets
there. For eternity.
