Poker Mentality

All my life I have strived to become the "sucker" at poker. If I had
used a little discipline, I most likely would have attained my goal
early in life. That is another story. Since I have played poker, I
have always heard "what a sucker he is". What a "fish" he is. I heard
this story over and over all of my life.

When we were playing for very large stakes in the 60's and 70's, I
would watch people drop $100,000 or more in a game I was in. More
often as not, they were cheated. All the comments when the person left
were the same,"what a sucker". The "guy" would come in, drop $100,000,
not even whimper when he lost, and say good night when he left. This
was always the "sucker". Sometimes he would lose more. This continued
into the 80's.

Time after time, the same "suckers" would come back. The story was
always the same. They lost and the comments would always be, "what a
sucker". The times have changed from the middle 80's. Other games
entered the picture. Poker rooms became card casinos in California,
where the edges were not the same. Poker changed because you can't
possibly play some of the other casino games as badly as you can play
poker. Just as the game of poker has changed. You can't play holdem as
badly as you can play other poker games.

What I am trying to say, is that from the beginning, I always wanted
to be the "sucker". I always wanted to come in and gamble and lose
$100,000 or more, and have it mean nothing. I would always take that
position over the position the "rounders" took, "the battle for the
suckers money". Oh how nice it would be to be able to lose $100,000's
and not worry about it, while the "rounders" were chopping up the
money. I always knew who the "sucker" really was. Did those people? We
always waited, catered and let the sucker do what he wanted, after
all, we were after the "scraps" he was to leave. Five figures, six
figures or more, just scraps for the "suckers". And we would wait like
a pack of "wild dogs", for these "scraps".

Escapism to some, is work to others. Everyone needs a release at times
in their life. Nothing comes for free. Who is the REAL SUCKER? As I
get older, I know I was right when I was young.

Thank you. It has been posted before but most people don't read RGP like many
of us die-hards [me especially at this time]. This is a reason I repost

I once played in a 20/40 game with a person who would buy in for $200, and
lose it on the next hand or two, and buy in again for $200, etc. (about 10
times an hour). I said to her:
"L----e, you lose more money, $200 at a time then anybody I ever met."
She smiled sweetly and replied:
"Don't you wish you could afford it!!!"
