"Last March, our newly installed Homeland Security Secretary Janet
Napolitano explained, in an interview with German magazine Der Spiegel,
her vision for fighting what was formerly known as terrorism. By calling
these now "man caused disasters," she explained, we would "move away from
the politics of fear toward a policy of being prepared for all risks that
can occur."
"Our policies will be guided by authoritative information. We also have
assets at our disposal now that we did not have prior to 9/11. For
example, we are much better able to keep track of travelers coming into
the U.S. than we were before. The third thing is to work with our
international partners and allies to make sure that we are getting
information and sharing information in an appropriate and real-time
fashion."
Yikes.
Putting Napolitano in charge of a department of 200,000 people and a $50
billion budget with a stated mission to "lead the unified national effort
to secure the country and preserve our freedoms" was a "man caused
disaster." And it is one that President Barack Obama should fix -- pronto.
His No. 1 priority to restore credibility in his administration's ability
to protect Americans from terrorism should be replacement of Napolitano.
Her blundering performance on Sunday talk shows following the failed
Christmas day terrorist attempt to blow up an American plane showed
clearly that this isn't the person we want responsible for the security of
our homeland.
It's much more than her incredible observation that "the system worked."
Napolitano told CNN's Candy Crowley, "The traveling public is very, very
safe in this air environment."
This despite answering every one of Crowley's probing questions with "I
don't know."
Are there Al-Qaeda ties? How could he have gotten past security and on the
plane carrying an explosive? How could he fly to the U.S. when his own
father -- a wealthy banker -- briefed our embassy officials about what he
saw his son up to?
Crowley, astonished, asked the Secretary how she could possibly be
reassuring Americans that they are safe when she seemed to know nothing
about what happened.
"....if it was properly screened and he got on anyway with that, it
doesn't feel that safe."
Napolitano: "Well, you know it should."
The same morning on NBC's "Meet the Press,'' David Gregory asked
Napolitano if the amount of explosives the young man had was enough "to
bring down the plane."
Her reply: "I think we're far from knowing that." This two days after the
incident.
Her own agenda and bias emerged in the interview with Gregory. He asked if
there were Al Qaeda ties and she responded, "Again, we don't know."
But in concluding, Gregory asked her if we should continue to view Al
Qaeda as a threat.
Referring, in her rambling response, to this latest incident, Napolitano
noted "And while this case does not appear specifically connected
there..."
The Obama team knows how to fire CEOs.
Since General Motors became a subsidiary of the U.S. government after
getting bailed out with taxpayer funds, two CEOs have been forced out.
Their failure was not coming up with plans for selling Chevrolets, Buicks,
and Cadillacs that pleased their government overseers.
Surely at least the same standard for performance should be demanded of
someone responsible for America's security and American lives.
Barack Obama has led a charmed life.
The botched terrorist effort on Christmas was a gift to the 300 innocent
passengers on that plane and a gift to America.
But it was also a potential political gift to Obama. Americans rally
around their president when we are threatened. Making the right moves now
could prove a political boon to him.
And the right move now is finding and installing a qualified Homeland
Security secretary."

For America's sake, I hope you're right. Also, if there is a third
terrorist attack on American soil on Obama's watch, you're going to see an
uprising in this country that will make the Taxed Enough Already protests
look mild by comparison. First there was the Ft. Hood massacre, then the
Christmas airline bomb attack in Detroit - one more and Obama can forget
about a second term. BTW, the latest poll shows that 71% of Americans
oppose Obama's decision to turn the Detroit muslim terrorist over to
civilian authorities, instead of turning him over to the military.

Support for Napolitano from Bush Officials:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/04/us/politics/04security.html?ref=us
Key Republican and independent senators and former members of the Bush
administration spoke up Sunday in support of Janet Napolitano, the secretary
of homeland security, despite stinging criticism last week of her comments
that a Nigerian's foiled effort to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on
Christmas Day showed that "the system worked really smoothly."
Michael Chertoff, her predecessor as homeland security secretary, when asked
on NBC's "Meet the Press" television program whether he had confidence in
Ms. Napolitano, said forcefully, "I do."
Susan Collins of Maine, the ranking Republican on the Senate homeland
security committee, said she found Ms. Napolitano's comments "bizarre and
inappropriate." Nevertheless, she said, she has confidence in Ms. Napolitano
and that she is working hard to keep the nation safe.
Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, who heads the homeland security
committee and has assailed the Obama's administration failure to prevent the
Nigerian suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, from boarding the Northwest
Airlines plane, said on the same program that Ms. Napolitano had done a
"tremendous" job. He said her words were "subject to a misunderstanding" and
that he didn't agree with her choice of words, but he too had confidence in
her work.

I think you're wrong about this part. I think that the public doesn't
understand these last 2 attacks. IMO, they are thinking that these have
been the acts of individuals acting alone. The Fort Hood attack can be
looked at that way but people are turning their heads in denial about the
cause: The toxic poison w/i the Muslim community that festered in the
mind of a believer, a poison that is not denounced sufficiently by the
mainstream Muslim community to hopefully dissuade the deluded.
The second attacker was clearly aided by terrorists. It wasn't the
spectacle they are normally after but it was 'good enough for now' and it
is virtually unimaginable that he could procure the materials and hatch
the plot by himself.
Our government doesn't want to face the truth of either because it would
require hard measures that they can't bring themselves to believe are
necessary. These are soft people running things now, the enemy knows it
and will act accordingly. Hopefully their efforts will be thwarted but I
fear something will necessarily get through.

What kind of cheap-shot bullshit is this now? Let me ask you
something, when Hasan Akbar, US Army sergeant, flipped out and
grenaded other soldiers back in 03, in a situation almost identical to
circumstances at Fort Hood (Devout zealot with history of mental
issues and bitterness about the war), were you counting it as a
terrorist attack under the Bush administration? Some of you guys are
just chomping at the bit to undercut Obama. They've got enough
legitimate problems and issues and flaws in their governance without
having to sort through this sorry ass posturing -- which does nothing
but confuse issues that actually are important.
Alright, I'm glad we had this little chat. I think I'll go for a
latte.

I see why it's "Irish" Mike; he know nothing of America.

These 'attack's can be attributed, again, to Bush's incompetence. Bush is
the one that pulled out of Afghanistan and allowed the enemy to grow and
prosper. Bush even admitted he didn't care about capturing Osama bin Laden.
"Osama Ben Laden .. ahh I don't think about him."
So Obama and the Democrats 'inherit' an unstable Afghanistan that Bush
intentionally abandoned to fight Cheney's oil war in Iraq. And you wonder
why the enemy is so strong?
Cut & Paste & Run Mike will NOT address these facts. It's why he killfiles
those that show him a fool.

Wow, you're right! First a crazy guy shoots a bunch of people -
that's never happened before, so it's obviously Obama's fault. Then
some other crazy guy kills zero people - zero! All at once! Well, if
that ever happens again I am sure that the TEA protestors will just go
crazy. Mike is already crazy - that proves it's Obama's fault.

I think you are correct that lumping Fort Hood with the panty-bomber is
wrong. It is also wrong to ignore the Akbar incident. But it is also wrong
to ignore the latest incident for what it is.
I agree that America is getting softer every day. I believe it started
long, long ago ... I believe it is not a slide that can be attributed to
parties, but rather to the nature of bureaucracy. It can be slowed, but it
is unlikely to stop without a major revolution of some sort. I do believe
that the current administration may be looked back upon as one of the worst
administrations in American History.
Yeah, America should be more like Afghanistan - no softies there!
Well, no living softies, anyway

It's already the second-worst in the 21st Century.
