I never saw this before. I had to look at it a few times, at first it
looked like the security guy got mad because Cobain accidentally clipped him
with the guitar, but as I read the comments below, I guess he did it on
purpose. I am not exactly sure what is going on in this video. Many of you
have probably seen this a long time ago. Could you explain to me your take
on what happened in this video? You can clearly see the guy getting hit
with the guitar. Is it obvious that Cobain did it on purpose? I am not
sure. Do you think the guy should have gone off on Cobain like that?

Thank you, Misanthropic Whackjob, for giving me your personal opinion about
Kurt Cobain, but you have said nothing in regard to the video of him getting
his ass kicked, nor addressed any of the questions I posed. Do you have an
opinion on the ass-kicking incident?

thx,

I didn't watch the video. He should have had his ass kicked IMO whenever
possible. He was a douche.

Under the heading of Who Gives A Fuck, didn't this whacko kill himself
about a decade ago?
And isn't his wife/girl friend that skanky nut case bleach blond who makes
a fool of herself every chance she gets? Please excuse my lack of
sympathy for rich, famous people who piss away their lives because they
can't deal with the fame they went after. However, I think I will start a

She's sold millions of records.

Isn't that your measure of a person's worth?

I'd put "Celebrity Skin" up against "Going Rogue" any day of the week, for

I think you guys missed the point. Cobain was from 'my generation' I
liked the music it was pretty ground breaking at the time, but Cobain
didnt off himself because he didnt like fame or money. He offed himself
because he was an unbalanced individual. Money didnt change that nor did
'fame'.

Some have alleged that his "suicide" was staged, and that Courtney
Love actually had him killed because he was planning on divorcing her
(ie: kicking her off the gravy train). Love's estranged father
believes this, and a scenario is laid out in a book by Max Wallace and
Ian Halperin, entitled "Love and Death"; they even name their
suspected hit man. I don't give those rumors much credence; I think it
more likely that being married to the skank made him *want* to kill
himself.

I still don't understand what happened in the video. Was this incident ever
discussed in the media? That was the first time I heard of it. The
security guy's actions were shocking. Do you think it was justified?

By the way, you guys are talking about Courtney "the skank", but Hole was
one of the all-time best bands ever, in my opinion.

Yeah, she is a drugged out clown who has repeatedly made a fool of her
self in the US and abroad. The courts just ruled her an unfit mother and
took her daughter away from her. And you can rant all you want about the
"form and content" of her book but Sarah Palin's book sold 3,000,000
copies. No comparison and no contest.

See, I knew that's how you measure people.

> No comparison and no contest.

I'm not going to argue about her personal life, but the simple fact is that
Love's a talented and successful songwriter, a member of one of rock's most
popular acts, who's played to who knows how many sold-out shows, and sold
millions of copies of her recordings, becoming rich beyond Sarah Palin's
wildest dreams.

One distinction between the two being that she wrote her own songs, and many
of them Do Not Suck.

Another being that her albums don't fail basic fact-checking.

Out of curiosity, Mikey, tell me which musical artists you like, and explain
how they make it through your morality filter.

I'd really like to see how much of your list is composed of drug addicts,
wife beaters and degenerate alcoholics.

I'm not so sure that she wrote them on her own. I find it a little odd
that all the songs on "Live Through This" sound like they could have
been by Nirvana, and that when she was dating Billy Corgan, her
writing suddenly sounded like Smashing Pumpkins.

The story was that earlier in the set, Cobain couldn't hear himself
through the stage monitors very well and in a fit he tomahawked the sound
board with his guitar, breaking the system. There was a delay in the show
until they got the monitor working again through one speaker.

However, the monitor system belonged to that security guy's best friend,
so when Kurt jumped into the crowd, the guy took the chance to punch him
while appearing to be dragging him away from the crowd. Kurt decided to
get one good shot in and hit him with the guitar, so that's why the guy
started attacking him once he got onstage. Apparently he and his buddies
chased the band after the show and tried to grab Kurt as the band got in a
cab, but they got away.

I'm glad there is an intelligent, rational explanation for his behavior.
Other wise, one might assume Cobain was just another self-obsessed,

The security guard's name was Turner Scott Van Blarcum (seriously),
and he has commented on this vid many times through the years. Also,
Rolling Stone has more than a few bits of coverage.

Here is one's fans account of what happened that night.

"On October 19, 1991 Nirvana played a legendary show at the Trees club
in Dallas, TX. The show was the scene of a fight between Kurt Cobain
and a bouncer during Nirvana's performance of Love Buzz which can be
seen in the "Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!" video. Now, the club is
possibly closing for good.

The Dallas Observer published an article on the club, including the
complete story of what happened that October night when Nirvana
played. Jeff who booked the performance explains: "By the time Nirvana
took the stage, almost 1,000 people (including the guest list) were
packed into our club. The smoke was dense, and it was hotter than hell
itself. Five biker-looking bouncers were positioned in front of the
band, so you could barely even see Nirvana. Still, lunatic kids
managed to climb onstage and jump into the raging mosh pit. There was
no controlling this crowd at all.

During the third song, Cobain threw a temper tantrum--he took his
guitar off and slammed it into the monitor console at stage right.
Kurt had destroyed the console and left the band without a monitor mix
onstage, so they couldn't hear a thing. Creighton Curlee, the monitor
engineer and owner of the console, stood there with a look of shock.
He had never really heard of Nirvana until that night.

At this point, the security guys had become more sympathetic to Curlee
than the band. One of those guys, a tattooed behemoth named Turner
Scott Van Blarcum, turned around and looked at Kurt just as he waved
his arms and implored the audience to jump onstage. He gave Kurt the
finger and yelled, '***** you, dude.' The band started playing the
next song, and Kurt used Van Blarcum's back as a diving board to leap
into the mosh pit.

As the crowd pulled Kurt in every direction, he motioned to Van
Blarcum to help pull him back onstage. Turner was having none of it
and pushed Kurt back further into the crowd. Cobain swung his guitar
around and slammed it into the side of Turner's head. Blood flew
everywhere, and the audience finally pushed Kurt back onto the stage.
He fell to his knees and struggled to get back up. As he rose, Van
Blarcum slugged him in the side of his head, knocking Kurt about 10
feet across the stage. Grohl jumped straight over the front of his
drum kit, and Novaselic [sic] tried to tackle the guard. There were
bodies strewn everywhere, beer bottles flying towards the stage and
total mayhem in the audience."

The security guy looked like he was trying pull the crowd-surfing
Cobain back to the stage by his hair. Cobain responded by bashing him
with the guitar. Then Mr. Brave Security guy sucker punched the soon-
to-be rock star.

I don't know when this happened, but it had to be well before Nirvana
was popular. Had a security guard did this post Nevermind, he might
have not made it out of the club. Love the sight of Grohl and
Noveselic coming to Cobain's aid.

Thanks, Michael, now we're getting to the heart of this story. This is what
I was asking about, not what everyone thought of him personally. Thanks for
the info, although there seems to be some irregularity between your post and
those of Faybio and DannyC12.

The security guy looked like he was trying pull the crowd-surfing
Cobain back to the stage by his hair. Cobain responded by bashing him
with the guitar. Then Mr. Brave Security guy sucker punched the soon-
to-be rock star.

I don't know when this happened, but it had to be well before Nirvana
was popular. Had a security guard did this post Nevermind, he might
have not made it out of the club. Love the sight of Grohl and
Noveselic coming to Cobain's aid.

Ok, thanks, Danny, now that you point it out, I can see what I think is the
security guard pulling Kurt's hair before he got whacked with the guitar.
Before, I thought it looked like just an accident, and that is part of what
had me confused.

Also, I did not know that this was pre-fame time period, thanks for pointing
that out.

Hey, here's one more thing I noticed, see if you notice it too. Right
before the security guard halls off and smacks Cobain, it looks like he goes
to his mouth with something. What was that? Was he smoking a cigarette?
It looks like maybe he put the cigarette to his mouth and then punched him,
but I don't see a cigarette anywhere else in the film. What is your take on
that?

Thanks,
Paul Popinjay

Thank you for this account of it, Faybio. I am still confused about a few
discrepancies, though. Remember, this is the first time I heard about the
incident or saw that video, so thankyou for what you have offered to help me
understand this. But one thing I'm thinking, to me it does not look like
Cobain used Van Blarcum's back to spring into the crowd. I was wondering
that myself, because I figured there is something he stepped on that is out
of view by the video. I can't see that he used the guy's back. Can you?
Please re-check that video and tell me what your opinion is?

Thanks,

Sure sign a liberal has lost an argument and has no intelligent response.
He makes up some bullshit and then signs another person's name to it.

I'm going off of memory from a Nirvana biography I read that was based
on extensive interviews with all three members of the band as well as
others connected to them. If I get a chance, I'll dig the book out and
quote the relevant section verbatim.

That story sounds very apocryphal. No show would have gone on in that
club if anyone tomahawked the sound board with a guitar. I don't care
if Keith Richards did it, the show stops then and there.

Mike thought he was having an argument.

Hey PP

I asked my buddy about this and sent the description of the event that
somebody else posted. Before I post my buddy's response, let me tell you
who he is. He is a filmmaker and musician, and while he was making his
documentary about Sonic Youth (called "1991 The Year Punk Broke") he met
and hung with Nirvana who were on their first national tour (with Sonic
Youth). He became good friends with Cobain and Nirvana.

Dave says:

"Hmmmm, don't believe everything you read... I have the footage of
this somewhere (as Krist & Dave gave me the Nirvana video archive
after Kurt died) I doubt the accuracy of this report. I mean I was
not there, and not like Nirvana were not adverse to destroying
equipment, but this is the first I've heard of this, and considering
the source (the club would be at fault for letting in too many people,
not the band). It seems like the club managment were only trying to
cover their ass w/ this one."

He has the actual full footage of the event. He is going to try to find
it for me.

I agree, it doesn't appear that he did. Likely that their memories
started to fail the witnesses almost immediately, so stories about the
night differed. The video probably wasn't seen by many until it hit
the web years later, so incorrect accounts that very given previous to
it's debut still exist. Of course the bar woudl slant the story their
way.

Especially since the club no longer has a functioning sound board, and
Cobain's guitar is now matchsticks.
