Hi all,

not sure if any regulars here are in London or even how many UK?

but anyway this is invite to participate in whatever way in "The 1st
annual Brockwell Bake" bakery competition at the Urban Green Fair to
be held in Brockwell Park near Brixton, London on Sunday August 31st
2008.

Some of you may remember discussion I initiated roughly this time last
year as to how to organize a bakery competition. Last year things
didn't actually happen as the fair itself was only in its first year
and didn't really have the functioning Food and Garden zone to host
the proposed competition. However last year's fair was as a whole was
really nice family occasion with good type of vibe and for sure this
year can be better still.

In the end we have gone for a fairly simple and flexible set of
"classes" in the competition, mainly organic ingredients to be used,
"white wheat", "brown wheat", "sourdough", "non-wheat" and
"speciality" (characteristic non-grain ingredient) plus pastries and
tarts, cakes and cold pies. If anybody feels we have missed crucial
class or whatever feel free to point out ...

Oh bugger. It's a great website and super photographs (which I'd like to
freeze to see more) and I'd make the trek for it but we'll be sailing round
Svalbard then.

I wish you the very best for the event, it would be good to hear about how
it went.

Hi all,

arrangements for our 1st Annual Brockwell Bake in Brockwell Park,
Lambeth, London on August 31st going rather well. Maybe most
significantly the particularly well known 'real bread'/baking author
and critic Mr Dan Lepard has kindly agreed to head up the judging. Mr
Michael "the Baker" Hanson will also be attending with his mobile wood
fired oven so we will be doing a bit of demo bread shaping and baking
as well as the competition.

Members of the association of Traditional Cornmillers Guild who
represent the remaining wind or water powered stoneground flour
millers of the UK are sponsoring the individual classes of the
competition with flour from these mills for winners (and some of them
will be coming to the event from as far as away as Lincolnshire). In a
kind of neat synergy a company who provide wind powered electricity in
the UK, Ecotricity have agreed to sponsor the "Best in Show" award
(trophy + £50 to the winner)

Sounds like fun. That's Vincent, right?
That tomato knife works great (most of the time...).

actually the "Best in Show" award went up to £75, "Best amateur loaf"
and "best pro loaf" to trophy + £40 each and "best young baker" (16 or
under) to £20 + trophy + signed copy of Dan Lepards "the Handmade
Loaf" and we still got enough £ from the sponsors for a barrel of
cider and another of perry from http://www.hecksfarmhousecider.co.uk/home.html
to be consumed by the participants and their guests!

and we've got honey to put on our bread from the oven!

pleased to be able to report the first annual Brockwell Bake was a
really nice occasion

http://www.brockwell-bake.org.uk/

approximately 30 competitors with over 60 entries in different
classes, mostly of a really good quality - a really nice display.

pics at http://www.myplot.org/gallery.php?project=35 and from Dan
Lepard at http://www.danlepard.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1990&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=10

Rather more amateurs than professional (one load of which did
unfortunately get lost on the way to us). I think the pros whilst
really a rather competitive bunch at least in London are reticent
about actually being compared side by side. I would have been happy if
they had put in entries of things they actually sell to the public
normally but most seem to feel they had to do something special (and
often couldn't because they or their staff where on holiday).
Unfortuanately I do think this felling rather indicates the bread they
bake every day they are not confident is the best they can.
Nonetheless Jusdges bakery http://www.judgesbakery.com/ who travelled
form Hastings well outside London were very worthy winners of both
"Best in Show" and "best pro loaf".

The judging was really quite a spectacle in itself and took longer
than expected, over two and half hours for these 60 entries. You can
check some commentary from top judge, bread author, consultant and
critic Dan Lepard at http://www.brockwell-bake.org.uk/#dan
