In Victoria we are big fans of Rebecca's adjacent to Bastion Square.
Terrific Pacific Northwest cuisine. Inventive dining. The Herald Street
Cafe is also good. Back closer to Rebecca's you'll find Camille's which
has always been reliable.
When visiting Vancouver we usually stay with friends in North Van and do
not venture into Vancouver proper all that often so we have our old
"standards" that we revisit. I really enjoy The Tea Room in Stanley Park
and then a walk along the seawall. The Salmon House in West Van although
expensive and touristy was superb on a recent visit and you cannot beat
the view.

Hi, saw your posting and thought I would reply.
Here are some of my suggestions for Vancouver. This is a casual city.
shorts, jeans... are acceptable almost anywhere.
Ethiopian: Nyala
This place is on 4th Ave in Vanc. They have a booth at the Folk festival
each year. I pretty much make there stand my only food for the weekend.
The resturant is good too!
Chinese: Won More
(Szechwan) (either on 4th Ave or on Denman St. I have not been to the
Denman address in years) They have a fairly small menu, but also have a
whole vegetarian menu as well. (the Vegetarian lettuce wrap and the spicy
eggplant [with or without meat] are my favorites)
Vietnamese/Chinese: Happy Family Vietnamese Restaurant or maybe Happy
Vietnamese Family Restaurant.
This place on Fraser around 45th Ave. is my new favorite cheap diner type
place! They make a Vietnamese vegetarian curry that is wonderful. Each
time I have been there (~8 times) the vegetables have been different.
Guess they use what they have around that day. I hear the Chicken curry is
good too, but I love the vegetarian version so much, I never try the
other! This has a very different flavor than any other curry I have had.
The also make a very good hot and sour soup (different than the standard
one.) There零 is clear with a bit of pineapple in it. Other dishes have
been good too. If you ask for suggestions, they will suggest items. Very
good and inexpensive. This place is off the tourist track but if you find
yourself in the area of this place it is worth stopping in.
Dim Sum: Hong Kong Garden
On Main St. near Terminal They have a new cook so it is better than it has
been for a while. Go right at lunch time. The place is pretty much cleared
out by 1-1:30. With the exception of the next place, this is the best dim
sum in town (I have pretty much tried them all :-)
More Dim Sum: there is wonderful Dim Sum in Richmond (a suburb where the
airport is) I think the restaurant is called Maple Garden. It is in the
same strip mall as Starbucks (good coffee chain) on #3 Road. Sorry, I
cannot be more exact. This place has wonderful dim sum! this is also the
most expensive dim sum I have ever eaten! (around 40 bucks for 3
people)--but worth it!
Italian:
Pizza: Lombardo's
great brick oven pizza. This place is in a not very successful mini-mall
at the corner of Commercial Drive and 1st Ave.
Pasta: Spumonte's on Commercial Drive. Nice restaurant. This place has a
huge menu. You chose one pasta/polenta/risotto and one meat/fish/veggie.
There come either paired or you can pick and choose for around 18 dollars.
I have had a number of really good meals here. They make several
outstanding dishes like pumpkin gnocchi/ravioli topped with butter and
Sage. (I don't like sage, but love both of these dishes!) Reservations
would be a good idea here.
Arriva's Another Italian place on Commercial Drive. My favorite dish here
is the Pasta with Salmon. I wish I could make this dish like they do!
West Coast Cuisine: Bishops This restaurant on 4th Ave, wins the "best
of Vancouver" year after year. I have only been once, but it was
fantastic. This place is more dressy than most places in Vancouver. Count
on spending around $100 for dinner for 2. (that is Canadian dollars)
Delilah's: is a fun place. They get VERY CROWDED. They have a set menu.
You check off which dishes you want. They are known for their Martini's.
Complete dinner is around $30 per person (5 courses) No reservations for
groups less than 5 people. They recently moved. Show up early.
Sushi
Tojo's. This is the ultimate sushi experience. Sit at the bar, and let
Tojo decide what to serve you. Tell him if you don't like something ahead
of time. You won't be disappointed. Count on $100 for 2. I suggest a
reservation. Best sushi in town without a doubt!
Hope this is of use to you.
Feel free to contact me again if you have more questions. But do it quick
as I am away for a few weeks as of this weekend.
Jan
My favorite Ethiopian restaurant is called "Fassil". It's on East
Broadway at Fraser. The decor isn't as nice as Nyala, but I think the
food's better. Order your "Ethiopian coffee" when you order your meal
... they roast the beans fresh for each pot, so it takes awhile to
prepare. It's wonderful!
>Italian: Arriva's on Commercial Drive. My favorite dish here

Right next door is a restaurant called "La Rocca" (Commercial Dr. just
north of 1st Ave). It, too, is very good, and often less busy than
Arriva. My husband and I have been going there for about 6 years now
and I think I've tried almost all their pasta dishes ... all are
fantastic!

I agree on both of these! Bishop's is definitely a treat and Delilah's
is very unique. Try to get a booth at Delilah's if you can (more like
a curtained-off private room).
If you're right downtown, Robson Street is the place to go for a
variety of trendy restaurants. A couple of my favorites are
"Settebello's" and "Zefferelli's" (both Vancouver-style Italian).
"Cafe Il Nido" (on Robson at Thurlow) is also wonderful for a quiet,
romantic dinner.
Enjoy your trip!
