not be at all what you want, but I would *strongly* recommend a visit
to Churchill Arms Tavern (going from 3-year old memory, so allow for
some minor error):
Take the King Street tube exit. You can walk from there if you're a
sturdy walker... find King Street (as you exit tube turn right and
King St. will be on the left just a bit up the block). Walk til you
find the tavern (on the left side as you're going up the street). The
front is a traditional English pub -- and in the back room is a
*FABULOUS* Thai restaurant. I'd call that fun and cheap. Can I
come??? :)

A fun, cheap, and trendy restaurant is not necessarily of the class
of "best restaurants." That said, what is your desire? Good pub
food? You can find that at places like the White Horse on Parson's
Green in Fulham, or at Perseverance in Bloomsbury, just as a couple
of examples, and there are many more. Or perhaps you like something
like sushi, served inexpensively and conveyore-belt style at
Yosushi? Wagamama for Japanese noodles?
Or maybe a place like St John at Smithfield Market or Spitalfields...
assuming you aren't a vegetarian.
You want big-time trendy, and under the rubric "best restaurants in
London," then you search out one of the Gordon Ramsay places. Even
at the relatively less-expensive ones, like the Boxwood Cafe, bring
money or a credit card with a healthy credit line.

You might find that 'best' and 'fun', 'cheap' and 'trendy' are all
mutually exclusive. It would help if you mentioned which kind of cuisine
you prefer.
You might like somewhere such as the Hard Rock cafe, though as I haven't
been there myself I can't place it in any of those categories with
certainty. Perhaps try Planet Hollywood instead, which I thought did OK
and was more fun than most (not trendy or cheap, though).
If you still want 'best', I think in that category I'd include
Champor-champor, which isn't fun in the Planet Hollywood sense, and
Gordon Ramsay at Claridges, which is far from cheap, not trendy, and
about as fun as watching paint dry.

thing it won't be however is cheap! :o)
