Power failure
Last year Sheldon posted a link to an LED emergency light. I bought a couple as well as two LED night lights that come on bright when the power goes out. Finally, I got to use them in a real life situation when a transformer went out last night for about 4 hours. Theses things are amazing. The small lights were plugging in on each floor... more »

Been a while folks
Hi everyone... some of the people who have been here a while may remember me (my condolences). To the lucky ones who don't - hi to you as well. ;) Coming through google groups as FIOS doesn't provide usenet servers and a very cursory search didn't turn up any free services that allowed posting privileges, only viewing. I didn't really search very hard though for the purpose of this.... more »

Washington Earthquake
We were making fun of it down here, because it was just 5.7... but a bridge collapsed and that's not funny. [link] -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet.

Pasta Fagioli
That's what I made for dinner tonight. Deelish! Did not follow a recipe but did what my in-laws would do and used what I had onhand. So that was a large bottle of V8, a jar of those lovely purple tomatoes from Sur La Table, two cans of beans, drained (Butter and Small Red), a goodly portion of dried... more »

OT garden hose opinions?
Absolutely OT but I appreciate the varied opinions of this group. The garden hose I use for my plants is rubber, weighs about 100 pounds empty and is slowly declining. I need to replace it before it springs a spout and does a Yosemite episode on my great-grandmother old body. The reviews for... more »

Revenge of the Shopping Cart
I went to our local supermarket this evening and it was a bit breezy. In the row across from where I parked a woman was unloading her cart. She had a number of bags so I did not wait for it to be empty and walked to the store entrance. She put the cart on the right side of her car, blocking the parking spot next to her, then walked around to... more »

Anybody had cottage cheese lately?
For some reason, maybe it was the oven fried chicken, my mind went to a lettuce and tomato salad with a scoop of cottage cheese. My sweet husband went to the supermarket (Publix) and had to get someone to find cottage cheese for him. It seems they give it very little shelf space anymore because of low demand. I guess yogurt has taken its place now. Or, maybe like me, we've all forgotten about it. It was still as good as I remembered, but I probably won't crave it again for a while.... more »
