The entire thing has been pretty much transparent to the user, so
to speak. Only thing was to be notified that Verizon would not longer
be my email provider, that AOL would be.

No, it's not super widely available even in dense areas. My brother
lives in a more populated area maybe 20 miles from me and he hasn't
heard of them planning to be available there. Takes time to install
the fiber optic cable and, you're right, they aren't going to do it for
a rural area.
