If you want to buy American, you need to be prepared to pay American
workers a decent wage and of course the company is capitalizing on
"American".

I'd have to be grating a hell of a lot of cheese to spend that on a
grater. Get real, John.

I use a cheap cheese grater - stainless steel. Cost me less than $10
many years ago. Works fine. Go ahead and be an idiot - buy the $165
one.

Have you looked at other products? Nice stuff, but rather pricy.
https://www.jacobbromwell.com/shop-by-product

I'm not ready to spend $200 for a dog dish or $124 for a tin cup, but
others don't seem as bad. I'm willing to pay a good price for quality
products, but some of this stuff is too high for me.

If high carbon steel they will stay sharp longer than stainless steel.

The site has "original tin." I guess this means tin plate.

What I got a kick out of was "made in America by red-blooded American
workers." As if workers in other countries don't have red blood.

I hate those cheap graters. They're a bitch to use and if you don't have
a dishwasher, you're gonna need one to get those filthy things clean.

If I wanted to blow a wad of dough on a grater/slicer, it would have
slides and an assortment of sharp blades. The whole thing would be
stainless and beautiful. It wouldn't be made in China or America but
France or Italy - you know, one of them places with real class.

Looks like they manufacture new. I would agree with you, it doesn't look
to be worth $75. After all, it's made using standard metalworking
practices. Any company worth its salt can add a lot of automation to the
process of manufacturing that.

One large sheet, stamped, edges rolled, folded into a square tube
section. Lower section beaded.

One small sheet stamped with rolled edges and curved. Two sections
riveted together.

The greatest cost in manufacturing that would be in creating the stamps
and dies. The process could be 90%+ automated with ease so that even in
a high labour cost location like the US it could be manufactured very
cheaply in the millions.

I have a SS box grater that's much nicer that cost less than $3 30+
years ago, but for grating hard cheese I mostly use a ss paddle grater
that cost a buck at a Cheap Johns store years ago, it's nice for
grating ginger too.. the trick to making these cheapo stamped graters
work well is to spend 10 minutes dressing them up with a jewelers
file, file away the burrs on each cutting edge... can also remove the
burrs with a piece of beryllium copper, but it's highly toxic for
those who are not familiar with its use so fergedaboudit.

It's all to do with marketing! They play on heritage, familiarity and
the fact that it's made in the USA. Oh, almost forgot, it stays sharp
for 100 years... ;-)

When it's pressed out of thin stainless steel sheet, it has no choice
other than to stay 'sharp'. BTW, I doubt the original were made of
stainless steel. The non-stainless ones would have been a nuisance to
keep clean in the 'good old days'. They were probably made of tinplated
steel.

good quality box graters on the market for $20-30.

My Braun food processor came with an assortment of special blades for
grating. If I have a lot of stuff to grate I will get that thing out. I
will save enough time to justify the time and effort to clean it.

It's marketing. There are a lot of people out there who assume that it
something costs more it is better. Never mind the graters that are
$10-15. People will go for the $10 because..... well, it's cheaper.
Make the other one insanely higher..... it has to be better, and some
people buy only the best.

These days I'm not into power tools. I don't even like to use an
electric beater. I must be getting old. My daughter just got a
KitchenAid mixer. 20-30 years ago, I would have dug it but I haven't got
up enough interest to check it out. These days, I'm a very simple guy.

Too true. I have a good set of knives and I have a number of graters,
and most of the time I use them instead of getting out the FP, which is
a lot more work to clean.

I rarely use my FP. It is handy if there is a large volume of one item
to be cut, chopped or grated, or if there are a number of items that
could be done without having to clean it between. If something involves
a grated onion, it's going into the FP, and then the other ingredients
will end up being smooshed in there with it.

goes your 20 seconds.

The usual. Cheese fer whatever, carrots fer carrot cake, nuked
potatoes fer hash-browns, etc.

Immediately after using the grater, I stick the grater under running
hot water and clean it with a brush and dish detergent. I suppose it
actually takes me all of 30-40 secs to clean my 4-sided grater, but
only 10-20 secs on my single-sided grater. Not exactly rocket
science.

Who grates ginger, besides you?

I take an 8lb chrome dumbbell, smash the crap outta a half inch
ginger medallion, then mince the smashed medallion with a chefs knife.
I can clean a chefs knife and cutting board in 10-20 secs, also.

Grab the grater, shake it around in the water, run a dish brush across
it.... 10-15 seconds.

Well, it has held up for a number of years and still looks new. Of
course, I take good care of everything, and my colander does not get
hard use. I probably did not check to see where it was made in those
days (quite a number of years ago), but I certainly would not have been
willing to spend a lot of money for that type of item.

If you are going to do that much grating get yourself an electric mincer
with grating attachments. Cleaning? Hot soapy water and a brush. Takes
about one minute!

Nonsense.

I don't have a dishwasher and it only takes seconds to thoroughly clean
my similar ss grater, inside and out, with a washing up brush like this

http://tinyurl.com/omyr429

My first grater was an ss box one like that; I bought it in 1967 for
7/6 old money, which is 38 pence new money, or 57 cents USA.

I retired it about three years ago because after almost half a century
of grating, the side I used most was getting a bit blunt.

I paid about 6 UKP for the new one ( 9 USD)

I gave my old box grater to daughter years ago. The one I have left is
just a flat one with handles. You can hold it in one hand or lay it
over a bowl. It's all I need and it cleans up in seconds. no worries.
