I couldn't shake the chill off at 1 degree outside when I woke up, so
after a breakfast of bacon and the remaining eggo waffles this morning,
we are having beef stew for supper! It's on a slow simmer on the stove
now. I used Janet US's NY Times recipe as a basic guide, but far less
wine, since I only have the cheap "cooking sherry". It smells great
already, and it's warming up the house nicely. I'll be doubling it
since I have a little over 2 lbs of beef, and also adding celery.

What is everyone else having tonight?

Probably a salad with garbanzo beans on it. A slice of bread
drizzled with extra-virgin olive oil. Ice water.

Lunch was a chicken sandwich liberally doused with Frank's
hot sauce. A carrot cut into sticks.

It was 16° here this morning and I'm dressed for these brutal temperatures.
But supper will be some leftover catfish nuggets and ?????

Veg egg rolls and Spicy Szechuan Beef via a good local place via Uber Eats... enuf left
over for another meal...

Also an order of Ma Pa Tofu, large order and can add some more veg to make three
meals for later in the week...

Total with tax, delivery and 20% tip was $50.00, had a $15.00 off special deal made it
$35.00... getting five meals out of that makes it a bit more "affordable"...

I ate low yesterday. Bowl of turkey vegetable soup plus a slice of
peanut butter toast for lunch. Fast forward to 9PM, I cooked 3 scrambled
eggs. Ate 3/4 plain then a bit of ketchup mixed in with the last bit.

Nope, lazy me! Honestly, I didn't think of it. Darn, I have heavy
cream to use up too. I'd have to thin it out now to make any.

That sounds delicious, but I'm way too darn cheap for that. If I'm
really craving Chinese, I drive there (I'm aware that you can't); I
don't want to pay the $5 delivery fee, none the less the tip. heh

I've used a $50.00 Grubhub gift card that work gave us, plus various discounts 'cuz I'm
a newbie to Uber Eats and Grubhub, but yeah, paying full price consistently would mount
up...

I don't mind the delivery fee, on a couple of orders recently it was free, because I was a
newbie. And I tip delivery at least 20% always, that includes Amazon grocery delivery. Those
peeps work hard for the money...

When it's cold and snowy it is nice to have stuff delivered. Normally I'll order pick - up from
my local pizza and Asian joints, they are just around the corner... and I don't drive.

The order above was really good, nicely spiced and large portions. We have some good
Chinese/Asian places around, as there are many wealthy Chinese uni students here, so
lots of competition. Let's put it this way: Panda Express couldn't make it here, they
closed down... neither could Subway or Domino's pizza or Burger King, much better
options for all that.

I've got lotsa Asian ingredients on hand, I'm going to be making more Asian stuff, pretty
easy to duplicate for the most part... but fave thang so far I ordered has been a scrumptious tofu
dish, fried tofu with veg, heavenly! Will try to duplicate...

I tip well, on the rare occasions that I utilize a service where it's
required. I typically avoid these scenarios, because I don't care to
pay for it.

That is one benefit to a more urban area. Pickings aren't good around
here, mostly chains, and a couple of local diners that are pretty good.

You should post about it when you do! I've never been successful
duplicating Asian food, and I'm disappointed with it, so I usually don't
try.

As I get older it can be all about convenience. The "quality time" I have left I don't want to
fritter away on un-needed "shit work", I'm happy to pay someone else to do that stuff for
me, online grocery delivery is one, weekend food delivery when the weather is bad is another...

A few years back I'd spend half my Saturdays grocery shopping - taking a bus out to the nearest big
store (two miles away), an Uber/taxi back. So about fifteen bux for transportation, three hours of
my time. Considering the transport cost, and the fact that I consider my free time valuable, was
I really "saving" money? In retrospect, no. In my case, doing this to save a buck on a package
of "mystery meat" or a "deal" on red bell peppers or whatever is not worth my time, money, and effort...

It can be time - consuming, also some stuff like egg rolls, the good tofu stuff, etc., the resto
can usually just do better; next time I'm ordering something with duck, the resto can certainly do
better and cheaper than I... and there is something about the "taste" of this stuff that can be
hard to replicate...

Absolutely. I worked many years, lots of overtime and such and now it
is time to reap the benefits.

When I shop for groceries, I don't waste money but my first
consideration, will I like brand X over brand Y. Price is not the first
consideration.

Life is too short to eat cheap ice cream or drink cheap beer.

Yup, exactly...

And I'm still working, but now primarily from home. The money I don't spend on
commuting I can spend on decent grub...

Weekends are still sacrosanct, I'd rather sleep in on Saturdays or whatever than fret about getting to
the grocery store... and I can treat myself to meal delivery...

Same here. I do shop but it's mostly because it's fun to plot out what
I want. A mild sort of social event.

Sale prices only matter if it's something I get or something I just
wanted to try out.

I end up with lower grocery bills, but mostly because we scratch cook a
lot and our favorites aren't super expensive. Shrimp probably is the
most expensive favorite followed by Ahi.

I used to make my own ice cream. It was not a matter of economics. I
could buy premium ice cream for less that it cost me to make it. As a
result, these days I consider the premium stuff to be a bargain, and I
have no intention of getting the cheap stiff to save money.

In the past I have been known to over indulge in beer. I don't drink
much anymore. I generally have only one beer, so I make it a good one.
One of my great pleasures when the weather is nice is to go for a
motorcycle ride with my friend and we head off to a craft brewery and
have a nice beer. Just one, but a good one.

You also get to make your own flavours. My wife loved the coffee ice
cream I used to make. I added instant espresso powder to give it a nice
rich coffee flavour. Cutting back on vanilla in the base and adding a
little Gran Marnier made for a great dessert treat. I also had great
results with some very sour and bitter Italian plums. I had made a
conserve it them and out some into a batch of vanilla to make a plum
swirl. Another that I liked was rum and raisin. I macerated some golden
raisins in rum, stuck them into the freezer and then added them to the
ice cream when it was almost set.

Sounds good! Yes, I love to play which is easy to do when you scatch
cook. Breads here normally have added spices. Pizza dough expecially
have spices added in it as it mixes for me in the machine.

Just for your information. I had a customer once. He went to lunch with
a client and had only one beer with lunch. On the way back to the
office, he got into a minor accident. He wasn't DUI with the one beer
but he did get a ticket for "impaired driving" due to the one.
Not good for insurance pricing.

What kind of bike do you have, Dave?
I've never driven one (except for a dirt bike for a few minutes) but
I've always had an interest in them. Sounds like much fun in good weather.

Post a pic of yours or a link of it so I can see a picture.

Was that his version of the incident? I don't think a cop around here
would ever charged for impaired with one beer. Impaired driving charges
generally require proof of impairment. That was always difficult for
them to prove. That is why they came out with blood alcohol limits.
They are somewhat arbitrary limits. They no longer have to improve that
you are actually impaired, just that you were over the legal limit. Up
here we have a limit of 0.08 BAC for a charge, but at 0.05 they give a
warning in the form of a 24 hour license suspension.

One beer will not put you over.... unless you are my neighour who drinks
so much that he is likely never under that limit.

I don't get those big decked out bikes. I prefer something smaller and
lighter. This is Yamaha's answer to the Harley Sportser. It will give a
Sportster a run for the money but for less than half the price.

That is basically for statistical purposes. That means the when you have
had one beer and someone on the cell phone rear ends you at a traffic

You just need to watch YouTube videos. You can't learn particle
physics or brain surgery from YouTube, but Chinese style food
isn't difficult. The stuff I made yesterday was great.

If you make it yourself, you can control for the quality of the
ingredients.

Buy good rice. Buy good oil. Buy good soy sauce. Personally,
I prefer tamari soy sauce, but Kikkoman is fine. La Choy or
WalMart Great Value is not. Don't worry about whatever you
make not being truly Chinese, because the stuff from the
takee-outee joints isn't either, and neither is the stuff at most
pricier places.

Mothers (DAMM). Some innocent drunk is stumbling down the
sidewalk, and the mad mother is yelling at her bratty children,
instead of watching where she's driving, and she runs up onto the
sidewalk, killing the drunk. Fuck mad mothers.

LOL I get a kick out of the guys with the big boy bikes and insist that
they be Harley Davidson. I see them at various bike events. They spend a
lot of money on their bikes and then spent a lot more on all the HD
regalia, like boots, jackets, vests and when they are starting off or
coming to a stop they have so little control that they have to do the
kiddy car shuffle. They are a sad joke. FWIW, the reason my friend
got that model of Harley is that it was supposed to be the fastest
Harley at the time, and having done acrobatic flying, he has wound it
out a few times.

True, without a vehicle, it's kind of a moot point. I could easily walk
to my grocery store, it's maybe a 15 minute walk at most. Trouble is,
it's all uphill going back, and I better not have more than a few bags,
or it would be miserable. It's a 2 minute car drive at most, gasoline
usage measured in cents I'm sure. I could coast down in neutral if I
wanted to cut the fuel cost ;)

Being a 50's kind of guy, you'd not carry the groceries. Back then Dad
took the car to work and Mom walked to the store so she took the cart.

Easily held the weeks groceries and made the 6 or 8 block walk much
easier.

I used to grocery shop with bike. No more than a mile. Naturally, you
can't shop large that way. I would buy about 2 plastic bags worth and
just go more often.

Heh, back when they were first introduced, Harley was aiming to expand
its market to include females, the sportster has been unofficially
labelled a ‘skirtster’ ever since and considered to be a ‘girl’s bike’,
simply because women were the targeted demographic.

The Sporster was around for many years before women started riding
motorcycles in any numbers. There are versions of the Sportster with
smaller engines that are popular with women. Just remember that the guys
with the appropriately named fat boy bikes and their ilk are wannabee
bikers trying to project some kind of image. I am not the only one who
notices how they do the kiddy car shuffle when they start up and come to
a stop. They need to drop their feet to steady themselves because they
are bad riders. My friend and I are both capable of coming to a legal
stop and then take off without putting our feet down.

I have been to a few smaller biker meets. They are pathetic. You get
thousands and thousands of old guys on bikes and decked out in their
Harley regalia thinking they are ready to roll with Marlon Brando and
his merry band of wild ones. They have the leather jackets and vests and
the chains and skull rings. They have the decked out bikes they can't
ride worth a damn. Even sadder are their biker babes. One in a hundred
might be really good looking but the most of the rest of them are over
age and over weight and apparently suffering from delusions that they
are hot motorcycle mamas.

My neighbor goes to Sturgis. This guy is the ultimate wannabe. He has
two Harleys in his garage. On nice days he puts one or both out on
display on his driveway. Ever couple of days he goes out for a 5-10
ride. He has a pickup truck and camper trailer with a ramp and
compartment in the back to take his bike there, so while he is there he
can display the bike he rarely rides.

But it's an uphill walk back home, Ed. Michael didn't grow up walking
to school uphill both ways in the snow! (sorry, couldn't resist)
Neither did I but I heard that story from my Dad often enough. The
embellishment I was told was Dad and his siblings carried hot baked
potatoes in the pockets of their coats (of course they were wearing
mittens) for warmth. They ate the potatoes for lunch with a small
packet of salt. True? Most urban legends have some basis in truth.

Both of my grandmothers lived in a very small town and neither one of
them drove. I presume they had carts similar to that. They walked
about 6 small town residential blocks on sidewalks, to the market and
back. I do think even in the 1950's my grandmothers still had
milk/butter/cream delivered.

Thanks. It is a fun bike. I was actually going to get a Harley, but when
I went to the sister shop to get evaluation on my old bike I saw this
one on sale. It was a 2015 model still not sold in 2017 so it was on
sale cheap. I don't know why there are not a lot more of these Bolt
RSpecs on the road. The people I have met who own them. My friend and I
trade bikes once in a while and he loves the Bolt. I prefer it to his
Harley.

When I was married in the early 1980's we got dairy products delivered
to the door one day a week. Local Mennonite farm - Yoder Dairy.

Even today. I had a next door neighbor that got milk delivered once per
week.

Naturally, all those products were all natural, free range, organic, etc

I buy my store eggs for 1.99 for 30 count vs free range at $4.50 per dozen.

My mother, who does not drive, had milk delivered up until recently.
Ordinary milk, nothing fancy.

Now she has all her groceries delivered. It works out very well for her.

Incidentally, not everybody thinks that price is the most important thing.

My mother didn't drive but she had a cart and walked 1 block to the
Ave where she could buy everything she wanted from groceries to
newspaper, she also had dairy, seltza and soda delivered. Once a week
my father drove her to a large market where she could buy meats and
pick out a live chicken that they cleaned and butchered. Back then
most women didn't drive, really didn't need to in NYC... was easier
and cost less (5¢ for subway, bus, trolly) to use public
transportation than find a parking spot. Even today it's easier and
costs less to use public transportation in NYC. Owning an automobile
in NYC is a major hassle. Often neighbors get together and take a
taxi. During the '30s, '40s, and '50s people didn't stock up on
perishables, home fridges and freezers were tiny... people shopped
every day. During cold weather people placed perishables on their
outside window sill, or on the fire escape, or on the roof (most
buildings in NYC had a flat roof, the last flight of stairs opened on
the roof... lots of people raised and kept pigeons on the roof.

I do have one of those in my basement. Makes flea-marketing a lot
easier. If the store were up the hill, and roll the groceries down home
in reverse (or flat land), I probably would walk to the store.

Then again, no... I drive my daughter's mother to do grocery shopping
for her household, and do mine at the same time. I'd need at least 3 of
those carts, and she lives a couple of miles from the store (way further
up hill).

This is the exact reason why I won't go to many car meets. Too many
people have an asshole mentality like you, and can't just have a good
time. Why does everything have to be so serious?

Even worse are car meets for most ricers, Toyota, etc. All jagoffs. I
only travel for Geo Metro meets and some classic car meets. Those guys

Really? You have to have some idiotic poseur mentality to have an
interest in something? I talking guys in their 60s and older acting like
wannabe Hells Angles. I liken them to the rise in country music back in

Yes.

What snippage! I'm not sure who said what for this other than what I
know I wrote.

I'm thinking Southern folks would substitute quail. ;)

It was a tease. Referencing actual 1950's life for some people in small
towns without your real life in 2022 wish for 1950's whatever. Sorry,
can't go back.

I guess if you're doing auto fandom, the Geo Metro has
some appeal. They really did get astounding mileage.
They were "ricers" too, GM branded Suzuki Swifts. Very
few high mileage cars made it to the USA. Until charging
stations are as ubiquitous as gas stations, hybrids are the
sensible choice, and I like that Toyota/Lexus still uses
NiMH batteries.

True, but it doesn't mean that I can't be stubborn and try anyway. I'd
make you people eat your words if I found a woman with the same mindset
as I ;)

Yamaha! I took my wife on our first date on this one over fifty years
ago. This is kind of a spur-of-the-moment pic. I wouldn't get rid of
the bike for the world.
I put over thirty thousand miles on it, and it was running fine when I
parked it right there in 1980. I have no idea where the key is.

My ricer comment was in jest. You might be surprised with what a fan
group the Metro still has. You can still find them for sale, mainly in
the south, and they are stupidly easy to work on. Let me know if you
want another, I have 5 of them now, LOL.

Meets for them all over the country... the only two that I haven't been
to are on the west coast, up north and So Cal. Honest-to-God 50+ MPG
with a manual trans on the highway, if you aren't laying into it (I68
hills in Maryland are BRUTAL in a small car).

I'm an odd cross between highly efficient vehicles and old gas guzzlers
that I enjoy driving, with the latter mainly being relegated to in-town
cruising. I almost bought an early 2000's Honda Insight hybrid thing,
but it didn't pan out.

I have not, but I just looked it up. I suppose that I would try it.

The only thing that makes me nervous, is that many pigeons are known to
carry diseases. When you get 100 or more of them at once, they freak me
out. My sister and ex-girlfriend got a video of me screaming like a
girl when we were walking through an abandoned commercial building...
that creepy coo-ing, then they started flying at and around me! Rats
with wings...

I usually shop between 8 and 10AM. My store hasn't had regular old store
eggs for a couple of months. The eggs I buy now usually say "cage free"
and they're brown.
The last eggs I bought were white, XL, cage free and cost $3.38/dozen.
My wife swears that the brown ones have more blood spots. Maybe, that's
just her.
